Average stride length

Yeterday I took a walk and afterwards looked at my average stride length. The figure given (56cm), multipled by the number of my steps for the whole day up to that point, produced a total distance about 20% less than the walk alone.

So today I took careful note of the number of steps already recorded before setting off on a walk of 10.76 km. On completion my Forerunner tells me I've taken 15,682 steps (I am quite short!) for that walk.

That equates to about 68.5cm per step and yet Connect tells me my average stride length was 54 cm.

Does anyone have any idea what might be behind these significant discrepancies?

Incidentally, last time I checked the average stride length for runs seemed pretty accurate, so it appears to be walks that have the problem.

  • Could you make the mentioned Walk Activity public and share the link to it, so that we can have a look?

  • BTW, where exactly do you see the average stride length at the Walk Activity? Normally, the avg. stride length is available only at Running Activities. There is no such value in Walk activities, as far as I can see (though it could be perhaps depending on the device). If it is a value added by a Connect IQ plugin, then there may be a problem in the CIQ app.

  • Good point!

All my acivities initially appear on Connect as Running and I have to change the Walks in Edit Activity/Activity Type.

I looked at the Average Stride Length before I edited the activity. Once I'd changed the activity to a walk, that statistic was no longer there.

I'm afraid I've no idea how to make an activity public, but the figure no longer appears anyway.

Now you mention it, the stride length that appears for genuine runs seems pretty accurate.

Thanks for taking an interest though!

  • I've no idea how to make an activity public,

You can make the activity public by clicking the padlock symbol at the top right corner of the activity page, and selecting the option Everyone.

I wrote an extension able to show you the number of steps done during the activity, so if you make it public, I can tell you what value it shows for this particular Walk.

  • Thanks yet gain Trux. I'm just about to go out but will try that when I get back.Thumbsup
