Steps from Ransomware period

I guess my steps from July 23 and 24 will never be recovered and recorded in Connect? Were they lost to the ransomware attack?

  • I also have a Vivoactive 3 and just looked at the folders on this watch it has Garmin/Summary with lots of files .fit files in it including ones created on the 23 & 24 I suspect these are also daily summary files. So if I had been wearing my Vivoactive 3 during the outage I may well have got my daily summary steps back but I wasn't.   Usually steps between my watches will sync (sometimes I wear both on the same day) but as Garmin connect was down they didn't, and I was only wearing the 735XT anyway.
    Conclusion you might get your steps back automatically depending on what type of watch you are using and if it has the Garmin/summary folder. It would be nice if someone in Garmin could confirm that they folders are for.

  • Did you have multiple files in that folder, when you looked.

    The backup I made when the outage started had files for July 23 and 24. These were gone from the watch when I checked later, so I had to use the files from the backup.

    the daily summary files are updated daily so if the info is lost in garmin connect and you didn't keep the files for both days 23 & 24 then your daily summary data has been lost.

    I'd assume the files get deleted from the watch once synced to Garmin Connect. If you don't sync your watch regularly (like for example during the outage), then - depending on the watch - it might store up to 7 or 14 days of daily activity data.

  • I took a backup of the data when the server went down, but having tried to upload all the .tcx, .fit or .gpx format files, I still do not see the step data.  In fact I've just realised it's all the data combines in the "Health & Fitness" report. Can you tell me the folder/filename/extensions you used to recover you data please?

  • I am in the same situation but I don't know the exact steps I did. After the "saving circle of death" that weekend i lost one activity the first day and the whole second day.

    What was strange though is that the watch had the right steps locally and the daily goal green checks were present for all days. If the Garmin app could get that data would be great for everyone. Otherwise it is not worth calling and asking a person to fix it only for me even if they could.

    Today I met the 60 days challenge so I am giving myself a virtual badge. Complete PITA  though as before I had a 23 day streak and missed the 24 by 11 steps because I forgot to check. Almost 83 days streak.

    Files with extension .fit in the Garmin\Monitor folder.

    In such case, there are basically three possibilities: 

    1. The synchronisation does not work (the white circle around the watch symbol never closes) - in that case follow the tips in the Sync / Connection Troubleshooting Guide 

    2. When the synchronisation works (the white sync circle closes and turns green), but not all the data is appearing in your account, then it very probably means that your device is associated with multiple accounts, and a part of the data lands in the other account. It frequently happens for example when you reinstall the application, and inadvertently sign up a new account instead of signing into the original one. Follow the instructions from the support document Data is Missing from My Garmin Account After Syncing to resolve the issue.

    3. The storage (or the FIT file storing the HR data and the steps data) is dammaged or full. Try backing up and deleting old files from the folder //GARMIN/Activity and //GARMIN/Monitor.

    I opened a query/incident in Garmin Spain and the technicians tried to help me by restoring a backup of the files from the watch. The solution didn't work for me.

    I asked them to see if they could put the data in manually. I was told that the technicians in Spain did not, but that they were going to ask Garmin Global.

    In two days, I had retrieved my step data during those three days and the record of days with the goal accomplished. Now I have 106 days.

  • Thank you for the post above. It convinced me to ask Garmin just in case. Maybe my self-given virtual 60 days badge will become less virtual.
