In case you did all correctly, and started a cycling activity, but the watch did not record the track, then it is probable you did not update the watch since a longer time with Garmin Express, and the ephemeris satellite data is expired. Find the instructions here:
You did not tell what device you own, but on most of them you can customize the screens in any way you want, though the travelled distance is typically already present on the default screen. In doubts, consult the user manual for your watch, and look up how to customize the data screens.
