My Garmin 235 has just had an update and now it won't sync.
Some phones will reset app's permissions after an update, so make sure you verified them, and turned them all on. On some phones (e.g. on Huawei phones), additional settings like battery optimizing, and lock screen parameters may need to be readjusted after a software update.
As pshare suggested, the rebooting of both devices is a good start, though, when troubleshooting any similar problems.
