Approach S60 showing every phone notification

I have a Garmin Approach S60 connected to Samsung Galaxy S9+ on Android 9. Android went through an update recently through T-Mobile for security-related issues. 

Garmin Connect app also went through some updates.  S60 has not had an update for a while and still at v7.10. 

Since December 2019, every single notification from my phone now comes through on the watch.  It doesn't matter what options I toggle on and off from phone and/or watch. 

For example, google local traffic updates are silent on my phone, but since it's on my notification pane, it forwards to my watch as a message notification (SMS icon)

I've already reset my watch, uninstall/reinstall the mobile app, changed around settings.  Garmin reps haven't been very helpful other than asking me to do things I've already done.  Does anyone else observe a similar situation?  The watch works...just annoying and it didn't do this before. 

  • I could imagine for example, that during the Android security update, some security software was installed that preprocesses all notifications, and hence the watch gets them from the security app, instead from the original app.

    Go to Garmin Connect Mobile menu » Settings » Notifications » App Notifications, and disable every single app there. After doing so, test whether some notifications still go through. If not, start activating those apps, that you wish to keep notifying you on the watch, and check out whether it works.

    thanks for the reply and suggestion. However, I currently have all of the notification from the Garmin Connect App off.  However, the notifications still come through.  It's like the phone notifications are bypassing the Connect App completely and directly connected to the phone. 

    I'm chalking it up to a phone issue, I guess...I don't want to turn off the phone notifications, just notifications to the watch.

    this is laughable...my calendar notifications show up on the watch but now phone calls don't.  I'm so confused. 

  • Can you post a screenshot of your GC Mobile page in Garmin Connect Mobile menu » Settings » Notifications » App Notifications? Just to make sure we speak about the same thing

    You mean this? All applications are currently off. But still getting notifications. I also disabled. 'smart notifications' from the watch for both 'during activity' and 'not during activity'. Still getting notifications on my watch. I can't unpair my watch from phone via bluetooth/ant+ because then it disconnects from the Connect App.

    Just did a test with Google Calendar reminder set for +1 minute and it showed up on the Watch (but without vibration). Then I blocked Google Calendar notifications off and did the same thing. no notifications on phone or the Watch.

    So, I guess I can safely assume that the either 

    1. GC app doesn't properly invoke phone to read notifications or

    2. Phone is bypassing apps requesting to read notification and sends notification directly to devices connected. 

    Well, I don't have another phone to test with this right now.

    I appreciate you trying to help though. I think I've done just about everything short of resetting the phone which is not an option nor should it ever be.

    Here's a screenshot of GC app permissions just in case someone asks. It makes sense that GC would want to read the phone. But my situation defeats the purpose of having GC mobile menu > settings>notifications>app notifications or the Smart notifications setting.

    The phone hasn't been modified. Stock as it ever was out of the box.

    Also tested with 'System' notifications turned off. Still gets notifications.

    Problem solved. 

    1.unpair watch from phone (looks like the cause) 

    1a. Verify watch unpaired under phone's Bluetooth 

    2. Pair watch w/ phone using the watch, not the phone.

    2a. Verify that watch is not present in phone Bluetooth connection. 

    Previously when I tried to add the watch via app, it also connected to the phone's inherent Bluetooth. 

    Problem solved. 

  • Personally, I do have the Garmin watch listed in Bluetooth connections, and do not get any unwanted notifications, so I do not quite believe this is really the problem. However, on your screenshot I see that you have installed both Garmin Connect Mobile and Garmin Connect IQ, so I rather suspect that while you have disabled the notifications coming through the GC Mobile app, they still came through GC IQ.

  • I can confirm this works. My Venu 2 plus suddenly send all notifications to my watch and tried changing them but they reset back to all when I closed the window. Removing the watch from my phone and reconnect fixed this issue. Lost all settings, alarms, responses,... tho
