My watch 4s is resetting itself during a walk. What can I do that this does not happen again?

I am very happy with my new watch Garmin Vivoactive 4S , but I think it has a bug in itself.

When I am walking, sometimes the watch is losing all steps and restarts with telling the step. Depending on how many steps I made, I lose all steps. This happened already more thans five times...

What can I do to change this? I have already restarted the watch and installed the latest software update.

Can you help me to solve?

  • I've just started having the same issue. Did you get a resolution?

  • Low battery, perhaps? Or full memory? Check out the folder //GARMIN/Activities on your watch over the USB cable, and if it is full of old files, delete all those that were already synced to your GC account

  • This started happening to me last week. I don't know what is causing it but after it happened again this morning, I uninstalled GCM and am syncing only through GE.

It has happened every day since 2/6 and I lose all my daily progress in steps for sure and I think I lose floors too.

It's not low battery in my case nor do I think it is full memory - I have 4GB free on my watch. When it happened this morning I was in the car, not in an activity. I had 3600+ steps and when I checked my watch, I had 0.

Yesterday, I had 9600 steps and it went to zero on my watch and GCM showed 9600 for a while but then it went to 5400+ steps, which was the value on GC web.

It kind of made me angry because when it happened on the 6th I was 42 days into my attempt to beat my old 54 day step goal streak.

Edit: since I uninstalled GCM, I haven't had the issue again today.  Yet.

  • Well, if you had GCM installed and mobile data enabled on the phone, the steps would continuosly sync to the web account, and you would keep at least the latest count after the watch reset. However, I would suggest contacting the support, or having the watch replaced in the store where you purchased it. It defintely should not reset spontaneously.

  • Mine was restarting when I was away from my phone, so had left my phone at home and was restarting at the end of my run. Reset the steps back to 160 steps. But I still had my activity. And when you look at the graph in GC it shows a lot more steps. It's odd.

Battery was full both times, and no plenty of battery space. Not going to make today's steps sadly. So much for my streak!

Hm, that sounds strange. Are you sure you are looking at the right widget for the steps on the watch? And did not you travel, by chance, recently to another timezone? Couln't it be that the watch was still in a wrong timezone, and did just the midnight reset?

  • Nope.

It literally reset immediately after pressing save after my 4k run. When the watch started up it only showed 160 steps, despite running 4k. Both times.

And yes I'm looking at the correct widget, and my GC shows that many steps even after syncing and having my activity sync.

  • If you have all Vivoactive 4s, then it is likely due to a buggy firmware version. I see there is new firmware v4.00 available since a few hours, so I'd recommend updating it. Hopefully it fixes the bug too.

In any case, for device related problems, lilke this one, it is always better to post in the device-relevant forum, and not here on the GCM forum, that has no relation to it. Posting to the right forum gives you better chance being helped.

  • Thank you for your help. I was actually replying to a PP asking if they found a solution since they had reported a similar issue, granted I. The wrong place. Attempting to avoid double posting.
