Entering distance manually - units changed (in recent update?)

After recording an indoor rowing session, I'm used to manually entering the distance in Connect Android.

This is done through quite an unfriendly slider, but it was OK for me all this time. I had one slider for km, and a second for meters (in units of 10).

So, for example, entering 2.95km, I slide the km twice, from 0 to 2, and the decameters from 00 to 99, etc, to 95.

Today, I try to do the same, only to notice that the units have changed to metres + centimetres.

So, if I want to enter 2.95 km, I have to slide the metres 2950 times to get from zero to 2950 metres.

There is NO way that I know of to enter it manually by typing in the app.

What is this change? Who thought of that? Can it be rolled back asap? Or is it a new setting somewhere? This is really making a bad interface even worse.

Image as example, I made it up to 827 m before giving up on entering the distance.

Edit: if it's at all useful, this is using a vivoactive 3 on SW 6.30.0.0, and the Connect app on Android, version 4.19.1

  • Some more information on this:

A simple scenario to reproduce this behaviour:

    - activities, create manual activity

    - change activity type to indoor rowing

    - edit distance

Observe that it in is m and cm, with a maximum of 1600m 99cm. Was in km and units of 10m, and could certainly be more than 1600.99m.

When editing the distance of an old rowing session, before editing it shows as 3.95km (for example), after opening for editing, then cancelling, it shows as 3950.00m.

On an Android phone that still has the 4.18 app, the scenario above neatly shows km and units of 10m in which to enter the distance. So it seems to be related to the Connect app update.

I hope someone from Garmin will pick up on this thread and -hopefully- can set things in motion to get this corrected, because... this really breaks functionality for my #1 sports activity.

The 1600m maximum makes the indoor rowing function next to useless for those of us who actually train on an erg... Please fix this ASAP as this is one of my primary training methods

    Hi,

Any chance this will be fixed? Just had 5k workout, no way I'm scrolling 5000 times. Please either add km as a unit of allow manual entry.

  • I've been in touch with Garmin UK via twitter, "it's on our list" and "please be patient" is all I got. My patience ran out, although I still hope to see this solved soon, my two backup plans are: log indoor rowing as (outdoor) rowing activity. Sure, some data may be different, but at least it logs time, stroke rate, heart rate, AND I can enter distance in km and 10m units. Did this for about a month, and just last week (backup plan 2) I switched back to using Connect app version 4.18.1 (on Android), where everything still works as it should for indoor rowing.

Yes, we still need the proper solution, and I hope it will arrive soon, although I have a feeling that indoor rowing is not at the top of the list for Garmin. Maybe these workarounds are useful for you.

It's really annoying, and there is annother thread  here, where people complain about this issue.

Currently the only workaround I see is logging into garmin connect in a browser. There you can manually edit the workout. This will be no big deal on a desktop device, but if you plan to login on your mobile be prepared, that mobile garmin connect is not a charm either. You can enter km there, but the buttons react rather clumsy. At least that was the case for me.

  • Just got an update to connect 4.23 (Android), and it seems I can now enter a distance manually by just typing it instead of scrolling through all numbers starting from 0 meters. So, victory at last, it seems!
