Phone call notification delayed on watch

Hello Everybody,

I bought my Garmin Vivoactive 3 in november 2018, and, since this time, I have an issue with the phone call notification which is raising on the watch 8 ~ 10 seconds after the smartphone starts ringing. I thought it was a bug and wait updates that correct this bug, but after multiple updates on the watch and on the android app this problem is still there.I searched on this forum and found some messages complaining on this with different watches, tried the various solution proposed but none worked. I asked the Garmin Support to support me and the only answer i had was there procedure to reset the watch, Android app and bluetooth (very usefull to loose configuration and data, and time to reconfigure the watch...), since 2 weeks, I did not get any other support from them.

So now, I'm asking some help from the Garmin Community.

Here are some details about my issue:
My Bluetooth connection is working well no problem to check Weather, SMS/Email/Calendar/... notifications are displayed 1 second after the smartphone received it.
The issue is coming only from the Phone Call notification displayed 8 second after it rings on phone. And when I miss the call the SMS notifying the missed call is showed 1 second after.
I suspect a problem on the Garmin Connect Android app rather the watch because some people reported same issue on other watches and i don't think that the watch is filtering phone call notification.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 mini with Android 7.1.2, Garmin Connect 4.16.1. Vivoactive3 6.10.

If anyone has an idea to find the origin of the problem I am interested.

Thanks in advance.
  • Hi felixjoy ,

Thank you for looking at my problem.

I didn't install any of the apps you mentioned.

Some apps I have installed that could possibly have an influence
    - Nova Launcher
    - Contacts (Asus contacts app, com.asus.contacts)
    - Garmin Connect :D
    - Dialer (com.android.dialer)

    Thanks.
  • Hi,

I've noticed something interesting, when my phone is in idle state the time my watch displays the call notification is about 8 seconds. And when my phone is active it drops to 4 seconds.

But I still do not see what's going on.

    Thanks.

  • Well i think your notification manager is not updated.U need to update it.Go to settings and do it..It should solve your problem ">myschoolbucks">myschoolbucks
  • I installed lineageos 16.0 custom rom as my phone is no more updated, with this fresh install the delay is now of 4 seconds everytime.
  • Hi,
I tried with another phone (Galaxy S6 with android 5.1.1) and the phone call notification is coming at the same time on the phone and on the watch, so this seems to be a conflict with something on my phone. I'm still investigating what can be the cause.
    Thanks.
  • Hi,

I captured log of my phone while calling it (just ringing, stop when the watch shows the notification).

The only strange thing I see is the following line, which appears just after the phone starts ringing:
W ActivityManager: Permission Denial: getIntentForIntentSender() from pid=3015, uid=10091 requires android.permission.GET_INTENT_SENDER_INTENT
I checked PID and it is the Connect App:
Start proc 3015:com.garmin.android.apps.connectmobile/u0a91 for service com.garmin.android.apps.connectmobile/com.garmin.android.gncs.GNCSListenerService (ActivityManager)

I checked every notification and permission on my phone and they are all enabled, on Android and Garmin Connect. I don't know if this is related to my issue but it could be a clue.

    Thanks.
  • By chance do you have your phone app selected in smart notifications? If it is turned on, turn it off. I noticed that when I have my phone app selected under smart notifications I get a major delay between the phone rings and my VA3. When I have it turned off my VA3 usually notifies within a ring or two. Hope that helps.
  • Hi rawveeda ,

That's it, Thank you very much!!!

That was not the smart notifications where the dialer app was listed but I disabled the incoming calls notification (I'm on Android 9) and it works without delay.

The disadvantage is that the notification no longer appears on the phone and i need to take the call with the watch or the keys of the phones if configured.

I will see which one is better for me.

    Thank You again.
  • Kenarude I'm glad you have a workaround in place. I'm on Marshmallow (Android 6 - Yes I know old) I was referring to turn off the smart notifications in the Garmin Connect App. I would be hesitant to turn off the actual incoming call notification on your phone. I change up my watches between the Garmin & Pebble & no watch phone only, having to remember to enable that every time might be a challenge to remember. I would think your dialer/phone app would show up in the apps list of Garmin Connect - But I also don't know the permission/notification setting changes in Android 9. Keep us posted on your findings.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1471272.jpg
  • Hi rawveeda ,

Ok I did not understand the first time :o, I tried and it works (re-enabling incoming call notification in Android settings and disabling dialer app smart notification in Connect). So that's better, as I recover the call notification on my phone now. Thank you again.

What I have experienced trying these different use cases is by disabling the dialer app smart notification in Connect is that I receive the call notification immediately on my watch but not the missed call, and when I reject the call it is not rejected and wait ringing timeout before switching to the voicemail. (That's not a big problem, I just wait with my wrist vibrating during 10 seconds if I want to reject the call :D, and the button to accept the call is working correctly).

In the other hand, by enabling the dialer app smart notification in Connect, I received the call notification, after ~4 seconds, on my watch with the missed call, and when I reject the call it is rejected and correspondent switched to the voicemail.

That's not smart :p, but it is closer to a good working ;).

    Thank you for your help.
