Android pairing problem

Hi, so since a few days, my Forerunner 235 wouldn't sync anymore with my phone. This has happened before so I deleted the device from my devices on Garmin Connect and tried to pair it back as that usually works. Now it won't pair anymore. It gets so far as to give me the passkey, but before I can type in the passkey in my phone, the watch goes back to "Ready to Pair" and gives me a new passkey, and so forth. On my phone it says "Timed out while connecting to device" over and over in red and "couldn't connect to Forerunner 235" in grey every time the passkey disappears again.

New passkeys keep showing and disappearing and sometimes I'm fast enough to type it, but it just does the same thing.

I've restarted both Forerunner and phone countless times, turned Bluetooth on and off, all in every order I can think of. It just won't pair back up. I have no idea what to do and I can't find this particular problem anywhere on the internet... help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I solved the syncing problem with my Huawei P10 Lite by removing updates from Google Play Services. I had to do this previously as well. More info here.
  • I have the same problem since early November and recently I've found a work around.

Both Garmin and Huawei are to blame on this problem. I have confirmation on both manufactures and they are working on a solution but… 2 months have passed.

Anyway, by accident I’ve found the following work around:
    • If the Forrunner is not configured on Connect App, pair the device directly on the Bluetooth settings
    • Wait until the Forrunner is visible on the Connect App. Be patient, this could take some long hours but eventually it will appear. Some resets might help.
    • Now that is visible, when you want to synchronize all I have to do is a reset on the phone. Once it restarts I launch Connect App and the training goes to the system.
    • The connection will not hold for long but it’s sufficient to upload the training.

    Give it a try.

grolschie is true, it is Google Play Services problem.
I found this solution working for me on Huawei P10 Lite (Android 7.0), Forerunner 235 firmware 7.52beta and Garmin Connect 4.2:

    - Remove updates for Google Play Services - Settings/Apps/More/Show system processes - find Google Play Services and click top right "Uninstall updates". This will temporarily disable google services. Clear all data of google play services and Force stop google play services to be sure to restart it.
    - Pair Forerunner with your phone using Garmin Connect - normal way, this should work now.
    - Reboot phone, Forerunner should connect to phone now automaticallly (as normal).
    - After reboot, Google Play Services should ask for update, DO IT.
    - Open again settings for Google Play Services and edit Permissions - disable "Body Sensors" permission.
    - Now all should work.
    - Maybe good to restart phone and forerunner.
    - Sometimes disconnect, then you need to "Force Stop" Google Play Services, but then it restarts automatically soon and works well.
(Maybe some more restarts during this process necessary)
  • i can also confirm its a Google Play Services problem (Motorola G5, Forerunner 735). As soon as the updates are re-installed, the bluetooth connection stops working. So this is obviously not a permanent solution. Are there any updates from Garmin or are they (as usual) denying that a problem exists?

The steps above working well (let's say acceptable) also with current forerunner 235 v7.60 release firmware. Holds almost stable permanent bluetooth connection, synchronizing well. Sometimes, maybe once a day disconnected, then simple restart of Google Play Services necessary and working well again.
  • Just to mention, I setup a new phone yesterday - an Asus Zenfone 3 with Android 7. Pairing was easy peasy - no problem at all. One difference with this phone compared to my previous phone is that I am using 802.11ac instead of 802.11n. Bluetooth and 802.11n can interfere with each other and that was my problem with my old phone. In my case, bluetooth would kill my WiFi connection.
  • I had pairing issue with my Honor but it was running fine more or less since few days. Yesterday it was unable to load my last running session from my FR235 so I said to the Honor to forget the FR235 in order to pairing it again. Big mistake !!!
Now its absolutly impossible to pair my FR235 again !
I'm trying since yesterday, it doesnt work.
When I want to add a new device the Garmin Connect App said in a pop-up : "search for a FR235" then in a new pop-up : "Do you want to pair with FR235 ?" so it means that the App can SEE the FR235 by bluetooth, right ? Then I say "yes" and when I set "show details" I have always the same message : "wait time exceeded while connecting to the device" (or something like that because it's in french...)
I test the Google Play Service tip as describe in post above but it doesnt work...
    Heeeeeeeeeeeeeelp !!!ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1297937.png
  • OK, now pairing works again with Google Play Services tip, I made a mistake at first time, thanx for the tip...

    Hi all,

I have a garmin FR230 with 7.60 sw rel. and a Huawei P10 lite (Brand Vodafone Italy) with GC 4.2.2, I can confirm that Google Play service "workaround" works fine even if sometimes I need to stop GP service to restore the bluetooth connection with the FR230. Obviously this is a workaround and not a final solution.

Just for your info there are no problem between my Samsung S7 with GC and the FR due to bluetooth connection.
  • The workaround is not working for me on my moto G. Android 7.

What I have done to get it working is to download version 3.20.3 of Garmin connect and this working I have it working without problems for 12 h, personal record since the problem started. Let's hope Garmin find the problem with his latest versions of Garmin connect.
