Is there a way to view live workout data on my phone during a treadmill workout?

I see it on shows like the Biggest Loser and with Gyms like Orange Theory. People are working out and seeing their live results and heart rate data up on the big screen. Does Garmin have a way for me to display this data from my 235 during an indoor workout to a phone display or a TV monitor? Sometimes it is difficult to look at the screen of my watch during an intense treadmill run and would be awesome to see the data on a larger screen.
  • If you have the need to record an activity with your HRM strap - a good option is to use the Wahoo Fitness app, you can add Bluetooth or ANT+ sensors depending on your phone, when done you can easily share the activity via email/text as a .FIT file.   This can then easily be uploaded into your Garmin account.   I use this feature all winter with Spin bikes that have a Stages Power meter, so I am able to record Power and HR using Wahoo.   works well

  • Apologies if there is another thread which explains how this has been fixed -- i would imagine it has been in the last three years?  I got a Fenix 6 in anticipation of running my first full length triathlon in 20yrs.  As I recall, the bike is "pretty long" and it helps if you can stay aero.  Having to turn your arm, take your eyes of the road and come out of aero position all at the same time is unsafe,  inconvenient and un-aero.

In the "olden days" I had a quick-release kit for my Garmin 310XT and could quickly remove it from my wrist and put it on my bike.

    Have we gone backwards?

  • Hello, I have the exact same problem. I was going to buy Garmin cadence sensor for my bicycle, but I don't really see the point now, as I won't be able to look at my watch all the time. It would be much better if I could display my training live on my smartphone screen, which I have mounted to my handlebar. Then I could ride and have constant view of my speed and pulse (from watch) and cadence (from cadence sensor).

I downloaded a third party app to my android phone called "myworkouts".  I was able to connect my heart rate monitor strap and cadence sensor, both purchased from the garmin website, to the app.  The app recognizes bluetooth and ANT+ sensors.   When I work out, I start my workout on my vivoactive 4, then start the workout in the myworkout app.  I leave the app open on the handlebars of the spin bike or my outdoor bike, depending on what I am doing that day.  The metrics show my heart rate, cadence and the zone I am in at any given time.  After finding out that this app worked for me, I purchased a second cadence sensor, so I had one on the spin bike and on the outdoor bike so I didn't have to keep moving it when I changed up rides.  The app recognized both sensors without issue.   The app is what I call "busy" because there is a lot of data on one screen and it took me some time to get the hang of it, but it works for real time display.  Here is a link to the apps website.

I realize this is months after your original post, but I constantly check to see if Garmin has done any upgrading and research this topic every so often and happened upon this post.  I hope this is helpful.

  • Thanks a lot! This app is perfect. Why Garmin wouldn't allow this with their current Garmin Connect app is beyond logic. I understand that they want you to keep buying watches to read the hear rate, but to not provide any way to view live HR and other data on your phone is unacceptable.

Am I not already seeing HR in the app during an activity?

  • This has been a recent addition. Maybe a year or maybe less.

However, I think you can't keep this screen on as the phone screen will go off after 30 seconds or whatever your screen lockout setting is. You can't use it while running on a treadmill because it keeps switching off.

All the analysis that Garmin provides, graphs, bar graphs for HR zones etc after the workout is over, can be/should be shown live while you are working out. Will be much more useful. Polar app used to do it five years back, haven't used it recently. Currently there is no concept of a live "workout' on the phone Connect app. Everything is displayed, analyzed after the workout is over.

Mine is set to not lockout. I always check that before starting a treadmll run. So, I do see live HR data during my entire activity. Sometimes more than an hour long. Anything else, I can view on the watch, and analyze post-run in the app and Garmin Connect Web. If you want all the other data live on the app, you should request it here - Share Ideas | Garmin

  • Ok great. Will do. Thanks.

Unfortunately none of our devices lets us set the screen to not lockout. Times vary but somewhere between 30 seconds and 2 minutes for screen timeout. Maybe there is a setting within the Garmin Connect app to prevent the screen from turning off? I will keep looking.
