Garmin Connect Mobile 3.13.0.1 update - notifications don't go away

The android app updated today. I noticed something changed in the sms and call permissons and in the access to notifications in the definitions of my phone.
Now after I get a notification it doesn't go away on my edge 520 after I read or even delete the sms on the phone. I was stuck with 15 notifications I already read and deleted. Going back to version 3.12.0.1 solved it.

Can anyone else reproduce this bug?
  • We appreciate the discussion on this topic, and apologize for the delay in our response. This is an issue that we are working to address in the next update to Garmin Connect Mobile. This is currently caused by a permissions setting for GCM. If you are experiencing this issue go to phone settings>applications or app manager> Connect Mobile> Permissions and uncheck 'SMS'. This is a workaround until the update to GCM comes out to fix this issue.

Yes, I believe this capability started with Android version 6.00 (Marshmallow). Still a lot of phones running an older version out there. The only solution on those phones is to downgrade, and not update until it gets fixed...
  • Updated to gc 3.13.1 , but I still have this issue.
  • I'm on Android 7.1.1 and confirm that revoking the sms permissions does indeed solve the issue.

I lost bluetooth connection to my Fenix 3 after doing this, but opening the Connect app again restored the connection.
  • I can also confirm the bug is still there after the 3.13.1 update from January 14th. It appears to be okay at first, then after a few hours I suddenly have a bunch of "unread" notifies for SMS that I cannot clear. Also I'm on Lollipop and do not have the option to remove SMS permissions under the app settings.

It seems to clear them initially ok, but they come back if the bluetooth connection drops out and then reconnects again. And you can't dismiss them for a second time. Only way I can find to clear them is restarting the phone.

I contacted Garmin support, who gave me following advice which has worked for me so far.

"I would strongly suggest uninstalling and reinstalling the Garmin Connect App. After you have done this re-pair your device with the app and the issue should now be resolved."

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app but unfortunately the first loss of BT brought the messages back. I've found that you can use the previous workaround (toggle off/on Text Messages in the smart notifications setting) but they won't disappear straight away. I normally try reading them again (not sure you need to do this) and then gradually, one at a time, they disappear. It can take several minutes for them all to go.

(sorry about the strange title to my reply - must have typed the captcha in the wrong box! Doh!)

I noticed something strange when I look at the Garmin Connect Permissions on my phone, SMS is turned off, yet I am getting the SMS notifications, working perfectly now.

I wonder if I turned it on I would start getting double notifications again. Seeing as everything is working fine e at the moment, I am reluctant to change it to test what happens. Attached image shows my current permissions.
  • GC reinstallation does not help at all. Still the same bug.

Try going into your phones settings, and turning off SMS permissions for Garmin Connect. You will still get SMS messages on your watch, but it may solve your problem.
