Fenix 2; Garmin Connect Mobile Android 3.10; Device registration failed. OTHER_FATAL

Hi All,

I've got a fenix 2 with the latest fw: 4.50, and I want to sync the watch with my OnePlus 3 using the Garmin Connect Mobile Android app (version 3.10).

So everything goes ok, up until step 4 of "Setting up device...". After successfully reading the device identification file, the device registration failed. OTHER_FATAL?

Can somebody explain to me how this works... The watch will actually get registered and sync through Garmin Express on my Mac though.

I can reproduce the situation after:
- using a different Android device (Samsung Galaxy Tab S)
- switching from WiFi to LTE
- rebooting the watch
- rebooting the phone
- factory reset of the watch
- switching the timezone's (now back at auto timezone)
- reinstalling the Garmin Connect app on my phone
- turning off bluetooth, and let the app notify me to switch bluetooth on (although this probably has nothing to do with the registration problem...)

Does somebody know what to do? Running out of options here. Seems to be a Garmin service side issue?

I'm almost giving up, and switching towards a Polar M600 over this problem.

Regards

Garmin gave me a new fix

Garmin replied to one of my support emails. Here is their fix. I have not had to try it yet because I was able to pair my watch when I downgraded to version 3.3, and since upgrading it has stayed paired.

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I will be happy to assist you with your request and apologize about the inconvenience.

We're sorry for the delay in finding the resolution to this issue, which we have determined is due to the changes made in recent Android software updates.

To pair your fenix 2 with Garmin Connect Mobile on your smartphone, you will first need to pair the watch with the phone.

Once the watch is found on your smartphone, you will be asked to enter the 6-digit number on the phone. At this point, you will be able to pair the fenix 2 to the Connect Mobile app, if it doesn't show that its already paired and is syncing.

    Only a partial fix

Well that was only a partial fix. I can connect and sync, but each time I sync I am now asked to enter the authentication code. I enter it, the device setup screen pops up, and then it tries to go through the whole authentication and registration process again. When it gets to the registration I still get the OTHER_FATAL error. I can exit the device setup page, and then everything syncs, but I have to exit before it gets to the registration step. I have to do this each time I sync, or every couple minutes if I have bluetooth always on.

I also had issues after a couple of days. I started from scratch again and now it is working (but of course I don't know how long it will last).
These are the actions I took today to get it working (posted this also from Fenix 2 forum):

    1. Powered Fenix 2 off
    2. Removed app data from GCM on phone. Uninstalled GCM.
    3. In phone BT settings: Forget Fenix 2 pairing
    4. Rebooted phone
    5. Reinstalled GCM. Logged in.
    6. Powered Fenix 2 on
    7. On Fenix: Menu->Settings->Bluetooth->Pair New
    8. On phone in BT settings: scan, when Fenix 2 found: pair.
    9. Fenix 2 displays code, entered that on phone. BT icon on Fenix 2 is now blinking.
    10. In GCM: Open the app menu (3 horizontal lines)
    11. Touch Garmin Devices
    12. Waited 10 seconds or so. (BT icon on Fenix 2 is now solid on)
    13. Fenix 2 was now listed as Connected and doing a sync. No further action was necessary.
    14. Recorded a new dummy activity. It synced within seconds of saving it without any action. Notifications work.

Edit: Repeated steps 6 - 13 with the original Fenix, and that also worked in the exact same way.

    hmm

Yeah, still not working for me as of yesterday. I gave up on the current version after my third watch reset and installed GCM version 3.3.2. Syncing works there without a hitch. Garmin support said they have their people working on it, but also told me to reset the watch and reinstall GCM again.
  • My case with Garmin Support about this is open since Sept 27.
I'm also back at 3.3.2. 3.10 version + Fenix 2 was too unreliable. Notifications stopped working 1 or 2 times per day, after rebooting the phone they came through again, but I need that to just work all day.
And the big bonus of 3.3.2 (and 3.4) is the automatic upload that you can turn off and on when you want to, so no more attempts to sync large GPS tracks while the data connection is so lousy that it takes hours and hours.
  • Identified as an issue

I have the same problem with my fenix 2 and a Samsung Galaxy S5 running Android 6.0.1. After about an hour with Garmin support, the rep told me they are seeing some reports of this behavior and it is now considered an issue. The rep indicated it could be at least 2 weeks for a fix which would likely be an update to the Garmin Connect app.
  • I had been able to downgrade and have the applications sync. That's no longer working for me since I change phones to an S7. Now I'm connected but the sync fails. I've tried all of the Garmin copy/paste support steps.

Final conclusion - not buying a Garmin product again.

Good news is that the S7 supports Ant+. I can now connect my HRM to my phone and bypass Garmin connect.

Here's a tip for you garmin, stick to what you do well, making GPS units, not social software that is a ghost town.
