Fenix 2; Garmin Connect Mobile Android 3.10; Device registration failed. OTHER_FATAL

Hi All,

I've got a fenix 2 with the latest fw: 4.50, and I want to sync the watch with my OnePlus 3 using the Garmin Connect Mobile Android app (version 3.10).

So everything goes ok, up until step 4 of "Setting up device...". After successfully reading the device identification file, the device registration failed. OTHER_FATAL?

Can somebody explain to me how this works... The watch will actually get registered and sync through Garmin Express on my Mac though.

I can reproduce the situation after:
- using a different Android device (Samsung Galaxy Tab S)
- switching from WiFi to LTE
- rebooting the watch
- rebooting the phone
- factory reset of the watch
- switching the timezone's (now back at auto timezone)
- reinstalling the Garmin Connect app on my phone
- turning off bluetooth, and let the app notify me to switch bluetooth on (although this probably has nothing to do with the registration problem...)

Does somebody know what to do? Running out of options here. Seems to be a Garmin service side issue?

I'm almost giving up, and switching towards a Polar M600 over this problem.

Regards
  • I have seen it before but only once, and at that time the Connect servers were unreachable. This post looks similar: http://https://forums.garmin.com/archive/index.php/t-259807.html
Contact Support, they can tell you how to proceed.

Hey jeroendee- I'm in the same boat. Fenix 2 with software version 4.50, Samsung S7 with Garmin Connect v3.10. I had an epic ride this morning, and I went to upload the file and boom- I'm getting the other-fatal error message just like you. I have struggled with pairing the Fenix 2 since I bought it, usually I have to forget the watch from the GC app and re-pair to get it to work, but this error message was new to me. Dead in the water. Really. Really. Annoying.

Hey Garmin- are the servers having issues, or is it just our weird combination of a Fenix2 with Android? Unfortunately I'm a Linux user, so I can't just plug into my computer because, ahem, Garmin doesn't support Linux... I used Polar HRM's for years, but hated their straps. Now I'm 2 Garmin's deep, and I love them when they work. But if I have to re-pair every time I want to connect the watch to my phone, I'm not down for that.

    Brandon.

I'm having the identical issue with Connect Mobile v3.1 and feniz 2 v4.5 I've made several attempts to connect, including deleting device from Connect and Express, uninstalling/re-installing Connect Mobile, and restarting both the watch and my mobile device. Certain Android devices receive the system updates from Google sooner than others and using the Nexus 5x (Google device), I am in that category. Just received system update last week to 7.0 and it's possible that new Android software is ahead of Garmin.

Hope to see an update or patch soon.
  • I'm experiencing the same failure to register my device. I unpaired it and attempted to repair it after a failed sync on 9/17.

Running a Moto Style X PE on 6.0.

I even went so far as to factory reset the watch to try and get it to connect.

I am a Linux user too and never use Connect or Express to sync. I plug in my Fenix 2 and 3 in USB Mass Storage Mode. All FIT files right there (and on Fenix 2 you can even save them as GPX on the device).

    Here's a site that visualizes tracks: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com

You can upload files from the Fenix to Garmin Connect via any web browser (click "+" on the activities page, then "Upload your activities"," Manual Import", "Click to upload". Lots of steps and not obvious, but it works!

Hey Twinaxx- thanks for the heads up! After my experience with an old Forerunner and Linux, I assumed that my Fenix would also be limited. I'll have to try it.

Is there a way to force the app to revert to an old version? I guess I need to dig through the app settings on my phone...

  • Another one with the same problem here. Never had a problem pairing devices before.
  • I had my Fenix2 and HTC One M8s working perfectly for auto bluetooth sync so I know it works but I had to restore my phone to factory settings and now I cannot get the fenix and the phone to pair fully again.

I have tried all number of combinations of attempts and ways to get it working, mainly using GCM as that is where I keep getting the following error:

    Authenticated
    Connected
    Read device identification file
    Device registration failed. OTHER_FATAL
    Garmin device disconnected.
  • I also get the Device registration failed, OTHER_FATAL with the Fenix and GCM 3.10. Haven't reported it yet, doing so now.

You'd have to download an old APK somehwere and install that. Version 3.4 works with Fenix 1 and 2 but not Fenix 3. Beware though, changes in the Connect servers can make old app versions dysfunctional, there is no guarantee they will keep working.

Edit: Just checked if version 3.3 still works with a Fenix (not tested Fenix 2 yet). It pairs, it connects, it syncs activities, but notifications do not work (an to make sure, even on Android 4.4.2, location services are on and notification access granted).

Some notifications work, most don't. GCM 3.3 displays "Error" popups very often. It's not worth the effort of installing the old APK.
