Garmin Connect Mobile Android 3.5.0.1 released

My phone updated to GC-Mobile 3.5 this morning:
Move IQTm automatically differentiates movements such as walking, running, biking, swimming and using an elliptical and then lets you review all your daily activities on Garmin ConnectTm. (Available for compatible devices only.)
Fixed a crash occurring on app startup for some Samsung phones.
Support for new products including vivofit 3 and vivoactive HR.
Compete against other Connect users with group challenges.

I will report back later with a more definite statement, but it seems so far that one of the fixes has solved my Bluetooth lockup => battery drain problem. 8 hours so far and no lockup. (I really hope so, I've had to live without Bluetooth on for 3 months now).
  • The only time I've seen that happen is when the phone's font size was changed. I can reproduce this by setting a Samsung Note 4 font size to "Large".

You where right. The font size was "oversized" to 120%. That was not a problem in the previous version.

Why wouldn't unpairing the watch in the Android operating system settings be equally available and effective as another workaround?

Thank you for responding. Unpairing from the phone UI is not an option for a Fenix, it pairs from within GCM and you can't (un)pair it from the phone.

Initially I planned to use another Fenix (which has nothing to sync on it) with GCM for the phone notifications, and also wanted to keep the Fenix 3's Bluetooth configuration in GCM for future use, so switchiing Bluetooth off on one device was the easiest. But for now I'll just wait until the Auto Upload=OFF setting is working again.

I've never seen activity data being synced while the Garmin Connect Mobile app is not running. However, as long as the app is installed and the watch paired and connected, I can still receive notifications on the latter even when the app is not running. (I've just tested and confirmed it again with tablet and FR235.)

How did you stop GCM and establish that it was not running? For sending notifications to a Fenix, the GCM process has to be running.

It was so much easier when the Auto Upload = OFF setting was still actually effective, so I really hope that it will be fixed very soon!

Not even within the Garmin Connect Mobile app, like this?

Good question. I merely did a ‘Close all’, and saw to it that Garmin Connect Mobile was not in list/cascade of active apps. I know from experience that closing/dismissing the Garmin Connect Mobile app on any mobile operating system (Windows 10 Mobile, iOS and Android), such that it doesn't appear in the swipe-and-select list of running apps, would not stop notifications from being sent from the mobile device to my FR235. However, that's the user's view of which apps are running, not the system's view of processes and services.

Going into the Applications Manager in Android's operating system settings, I can see there are four services associated with Garmin Connect Mobile, including one Garmin Connect notification listener. I manually stopped the other three services (GarminAnalyticsService, GdiService, and DeviceSyncService), and notifications continued to be received on my watch. However,
    • GdiService gets automatically restarted by the Connect process after some time.
    • If I manually initiate a sync from my watch, or I open the Garmin Connect Mobile app and allow it to initiate a sync, then GdiService and GarminAnalyticsService both gets (re)started by the process to successfully complete the sync. (DeviceSyncService is apparently not required for the sync.)
    • Force-stopping Garmin Connect Mobile only causes the process and the four services to be restarted.

So, what I said before was at best imprecise. I have never seen activity data from my FR235 being automatically uploaded by way of a Garmin Connect Mobile app on any platform unless the app was in the list of active apps (but not necessarily the foreground app), so it appears the UI of the app controls the trigger for auto-sync. However, it is possible to manually initiate a sync from the watch and successfully complete it, even when the app is not among the active apps, at least on Android. Based on those observations, I believe it is possible to continue to receive notifications and not have your activity data synced or uploaded to the Garmin Connect service/database ‘in the cloud’ against your wishes and without your instruction, provided that you don't open the UI of the Garmin Connect Mobile app, including just to review your previously uploaded data; you need to use the browser and Garmin Connect online instead of the app on your mobile device.

It was so much easier when the Auto Upload = OFF setting was still actually effective, so I really hope that it will be fixed very soon!
    No doubt.

Thank you for all the info, ASmugDill.

If I have time, I will experiment with GCM on the phone. For now, I found that my tablet still had GCM 3.4.1.2 installed, so I disabled automatic updates on the tablet, and can use that for retrieving EPO.bin updates for the Fenix 3 if I'm too lazy to do that via USB.

I paired a data-less Fenix 2 with my phone and GCM 5.3.0.1, but somehow can't get the notifications to work. It's some time ago that I've used Bluetooth on the Fenix 2, it used to "just work". If I find the time I'll delve into that.

I'm using a Forerunner 235 and a Samsung Galaxy Tab_S tablet (released mid-2014) running Android 5.0.2, and not seeing connection or sync issues with Garmin Connect Mobile. Which tablet model and which Android version are you using?

I'm using an Acer tablet on Android 4.4.2. As I speak, looking at GC on this device it STILL says it's syncing but clearly isn't. I've tried everything I can think of. I sent an email to support a few days ago but this is driving me crazy, I think I'm going to phone them today.

    Fenix (2) smart notifications working?

Hi, I'd like to hear from others if they have notifications working with their Fenix or Fenix 2. I can't get them to work again, but it is quite a few versions of GCM ago that I used a Fenix, so it may very well be user error.

I reinstalled GCM on my Android 4.4.2 phone, entered Connect account details, paired Fenix, have working sync, specified GCM as OK for notification access in security settings, anything else I need to do? I
  • It may not matter but I recall reading that the minimum BT version was 4.4.3.

Phil - The minimum Android version is 4.3 (it sucked at BLE and probably not around any more and you want 4.4.x!), but the BT HW must also be 4.0 or greater.

I have a device with Android 5, but 3.x BT HW, so it will never be able to sync with BLE, for example...

    Fenix 3 with Samsung S7

Using this thread instead of creating a new one. Anyone else who has gotten problems connecting and syncing their devices after the latest update? I have a FR920XT and the only way for me to connect to the phone is by adding a new device. Gets a bit tiring to do x number of times a day. Using an HTC M8 now but have had the same problem with the older version of GC, vivosmart, and Samsung Galaxy S III.

Yep, I just changed my phone at the same time as Connect updated, but I have to delete my F3 and adding it again. Pain in the ass.

I found that rebooting the device after installing GCM and enabling notifications, solved it (on a phone (Android 4.4.2) and a tablet (Android 5.1.1).
