30 hours to download a map update?

Hi

I've just received my new Garmin Edge Touring and downloaded Garmin Express onto my Macbook Pro. I was told there was a map update so I clicked update, as requested.

However, after 30 minutes, I'm told that the update will take 30 hours, and the progress bar is barely moving. I have a reasonably fast fibre (40Mbps) connection, so what's wrong?

It says not to disconnect the Edge during the download but I'd really like to go and try it out, so it is already to disconnect it? I assume it doesn't actually install the update until the maps have fully downloaded.

Thanks

Phil
  • I've cancelled a download before without issue, but it has to be your call.

Time for a map update varies but normally would be around an hour or so. Certainly 30 hours is excessive and would indicate something may be blocking the download (firewall perhaps?)

Thanks for the reply. It's getting longer by the minute - 35 hours now. The predicted time was three hours which itself seems excessive for a 5.8Gb file....
  • Then something is definitely blocking it. I'd cancel it and start over.

I can't imagine what could be blocking it. Everything else goes through and I don't have a firewall enabled.
  • Do you have something like ghostery on your mac?

    No, I don't have that.
  • Are you able to try another PC/Mac? Other thing you could try IF you're using wifi is direct cable to modem/router just in case it's a wifi issue.

Thanks for the replies. I will try a wired connection although I am confident the wifi is fine - I'm often moving large files around without a problem. I do wonder if it's an issue with Garmin's servers?

  • While that is of course possible it's not a frequent occurrence. You could try waiting to see though ...

After almost seven hours it's telling me it has 1 hour 35 minutes remaining, so it looks like it won't be 30 hours, which is a relief. Certainly the longest 5.8Gb download I've had since the days of dial-up! :-)

Looking at various forums - including this one - it does seem that it's not uncommon for Garmin maps to take a long time to download. Very odd...

For the future, is there a way of downloading the maps directly onto the Mac and then copying them across to the Garmin SD card? I'd rather have control of the process.

    Cheers

    Phil
