Sending scheduled workouts to calendar - fail

I have a Garmin Forerunner 410. I used to use the Communicator plugin and Garmin Training Center application to send multiple workouts to the device. Worked fine.

Now I'm using the Garmin Express/Garmin Connect since it seems Communicator is no longer supported. Plus I like the automatic uploading of workouts and web interface. But I have lost the ability to send multiple workouts.

On Garmin Connect, from the Workouts menu I can view any created workout and send it to the device. It overwrites any existing workouts already stored on the device. So it works, but it's kind of a drag to send one day's workout at a time.

But when I'm in the Calendar on Garmin Connect, I select "Send to Device" to send multiple scheduled workouts to the device, and after a longish delay I get a message that the sync failed.

I've recently updated the Garmin Express software to the latest version. Express tells me that the Forerunner is running its latest version. Today I did a hard reset of the device but the problem persists.

Thanks in advance for any clues.

Have you tried with just one workout at a time? Does it only happen with multiple workouts? Have you tried recreating the workouts you are attempting to send? Does Express launch when you try to send to the device?

  • Have you tried with just one workout at a time? If I go to the workouts page and click on any workout, then "Send to device," it works. Although, as per the pop-up warning, it overwrites any workouts that are already on the device. So I can't send a week's work of workouts one at a time.

Does it only happen with multiple workouts? If I go to the calendar page and click on "send to device", whether I'm sending one scheduled workout or many, the sync fails. Express launches, activities are successfully transferred from the device to Express, but then I get a red message in Express saying "There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect." In Garmin Connect the sync is queued, but if I click "send now" the same thing happens as before.

Have you tried recreating the workouts you are attempting to send? Yes. It doesn't have any effect.

I am sorry for the troubles. Please see the FAQ: Can I send more than one course and workout to my device from Garmin Connect? The Forerunner 405, 405CX, and 410 can only accept one Course or Workout at a time while other Forerunner models can accept multiples.

  • The same problem is there with the Fenix 3. After the last Express Desktop Update, you cant send the calendar anymore

Thanks for the link. On that page it reads:

The Forerunner 410, 405CX and 405 however, can only accept one course and one workout. A workout on the device that was sent from Garmin Connect will be erased when transferring another workout. Courses work the same way.

Sending workouts to the Calendar first will allow the Forerunner to accept multiple workouts. The Send to Device button will transfer all the workouts within the calendar to your device. There is no current workaround for sending over multiple courses. (emph. added)

If I'm reading that correctly, it seems like scheduling a workout and sending from there is a suggested workaround for the Forerunner 410, 405CX and 405. But that's exactly what I have been trying to do without success.

Same problem here with the calendar. And only one workout sent from the workouts page too despite trying to send others, each overwrote the previously uploaded workout.

I was able to duplicate the calendar sync error on my end with a device and have created a ticket for further research.

Thank you for verifying the issue. I look forward to a resolution.

That article is meant to address the Forerunner series in general which can accept a collection of workouts when sent from the Calendar. The issue is that when syncing from the Calendar it introduces a new type of data that the 405, 405CX, and 410 are not compatible with. So while it says to do exactly what you are doing it is meant for Forerunners other than the 3 specified. I have tested this several times over the past couple of years and these devices have not been able to accept multiple workouts or Training Plans sent from the Calendar. The article is pretty confusing and Garmin Connects abilities are changing so we will continue to investigate it and update the article for clarity.

Again I am sorry for the troubles.

  • Hi Curt, my Forerunner 405CX would accept multiple workouts (I would normally have about 8 on it) as long as they were sent from the Calendar. Garmin Ant Agent ver 2.2.2 would quite happily send these workouts. It is Garmin Express ver 4.0.14.0 that has broken sending from the calendar.
