Garmin Express for mac freezes downloading map

Former Member

My garmin express freezes at around 12% trying to download map update for my Gamin 2597.
The CPU starts running really hot on the computer, and I then have to Force quit the garmin express.
I have the latest Garmin Express software. I have also tried 2 different computers, a macbook pro and an imac, and both just freeze at around 12% download.
Cheers

I am sorry that you are having trouble with your map update. The only thing that I could think of that may cause this behavior is if you have a security program installed on your Macs that is trying to scan the files as they are downloaded or a back-up program that may be trying to back them up. It is odd that you would have this problem on two different Macs as it is not an issue that I have ever run into before. You can also try the steps in the FAQ below but I have never seen any of the causes in the FAQ result in high CPU usage.
What should I do if I am having problems downloading updates in Garmin Express?

    Hi Jason,

I'm not running any security programs on my 2 macs.
I have never had this problem before, when updating software or maps on Garmin Express. I have a few different Garmin products(Edge 800, edge 810, forerunner, and the Nuvi 2597) and they always worked fine.
It's just this map update. It gets stuck, and in the 'Macs, system Activity Monitor' it says that Garmin Express is not responding.
The download slows down and then completely freezes. I then have to use force quit, to shut down Garmin express.

Make sure to turn off any backup utility like Time Machine while the map update is running. It is possible that the program is backing up the files while they are downloading and causing access problems to the folders. What version of Garmin Express are you running? The current version for Mac is 3.2.30. If you are not running this version, it can be downloaded here.

Thank you Lisa for the hint.
I had exactly the same issue on one iMac running OS X 10.10.2 with Garmin Express version 3.2.30.0, and the same issue on my MacBook Pro with same OS and Garmin Express version. I have tried also version 4 and version 2 of Garmin Express, with version 4 ending also in a kind of CPU stress-test and version 2 failing in the process.
With your recommendation to disable Time Machine with version 3.2.30.0, at least all goes good with the update till 95% of download of the map, and 94% of download of the LifeTime update. This was way further as before and looked promising, but when reaching this level the download stalls and CPU starts to max out again plus memory usage continues to rise. See print screen below. To me this shows that there is a considerable memory leak in Garmin Express on my setup.

    Some recommendations:
    - I think TimeMachine is a pretty common solution people working with Macs are using. So either have Garmin Express modified to be capable to work in that environment, or let Garmin Express warn before starting to update to disable TimeMachine or other backup software before starting map updates
    - since Garmin Express, for me updating my zumo 660 has become a nightmare having absorbed way too much time to repair faulty updates and updates not working. This needs to be resolved in order to keep customers willingly to upgrade to newer Garmin equipment in the future.

I will Force Stop Garmin Express and will try again, and really hope that Garmin works on getting back on track for its customers with device management software that works without much of husstle.

Same issue here. Trying to download a new map (2015.40 Europe) to my Nüvi 1440. After a while with normal network activity the download process stops (zero network activity) and Garmin Express starts to consume all available CPU and the estimated time to download now raises from 4 hours to 677 hours!! Garmin Express version is 4.0.8.0. Running latest OSX 10.10.2 with all updates. After several hours (5-6) the CPU consumption stops and Garmin Express is more or less idle. No network activity, no CPU. But still 677 hours remaining. Only solution is to kill Garmin Express.

After killing Garmin Express 3.2.30.0 (on my MacBook Pro) it was able to complete the download, but then failed on the creation of the map before uploading it to my zumo.
I have tried again with giving my username administrator rights and the error still presists.
I have now tried (with TimeMachine disabled and under administrator rights) on the newest version of Garmin Express being 4.0.8.0 and it fails too (see print screen attached).

Very frustrating and time consuming, w/o any result.

Have tried all over again on my MacBook Pro. I have done:
    - manually removing Garmin Express
    - empty trash
    - run check & repair file permissions
    - install Garmin Express 3.2.29.0 as with version 4 I do not get even close to installation
    - run Garmin Express 3.2.29.0 with admin rights, and with TimeMachine disabled

Result is again that somewhere the download process stops and Garmin Express Service starts to max out the CPU load. See enclosed print screen.

There is definetely something broken in Garmin's software!
What can be done to resolve as I have spend yesterday evening as well as this morning, so in total over 9 hours on getting something simple like updating my maps done?

Just to confirm, exactly the same problem here. Partial download then CPU shoots to 100% on Garmin Express Service and the download data stops.
    Please fix this ASAP.
  • I am sorry for the troubles. There were a few reports of Europe download issues on Friday. Most of those were from customers trying to install the maps to the computer as well as the device. Try running the update to install to the device only or give us a couple of days to identify and sort this out. The Europe update was just released so we should get this ironed out soon.

Again I am sorry for the troubles.

I can confirm that I tried to download to device AND computer at the same time. Awaiting the solution.

But if I do decide to install on device only. How do I then at a later stage download it to the computer to be used in Basecamp?
