Rural Canadians: DON'T buy this product.

After hours of fighting with the download process, I read the fine print. The "Garmin Express" software does not work well with satellite or Mifi internet connections. If you don't have city-style Internet, this is not the product for you. (Unless you want to take your laptop to town to update your Garmin.) Off to try to get a refund.

(Ps: earlier Garmin software has worked fine for me out here for the last 5 years. Should never have bought the new product and downloaded Garmin Express.)
  • What Garmin do you have? You may still be able to use the older programs.

We just bought a Nuvi 54. I had the old software on my Mac, and was having trouble making it work.
  • Well AFAIK Webupdater and Mapupdater should still work for you, they do on my PC. Mac shouldn't be different.

Actually, updating to the new software deleted my old software. I can't find a place to re-download the outdated Garmin software.

The official stance is that we do not support those types of internet connection for the download of a map. That is not to say that that they will not work when attempting to update the maps on the device. You will likely receive multiple errors as far as the download goes, and the application will need to redownload files and take up more data. This can cause you to go over the data limit if you are not on unlimited.

The map update client should only be used in some situations. In this situation, the client will run into the same issues that Express will. It will attempt to download a file, and if the file doesn't check out, will attempt to download it again until it either fails, or receives it. This will cause the same issues with data caps which is one of the reasons we do not support this type of internet connection.

Well thanks for deleting my post with the link in it. Once again you've shown just how much Garmin cares about helping people with issues. Hopefully the OP downloaded what he was looking for before your helpful post.

I always liked our last Garmin. I'd be a lot happier if you could have written "must be used with high-speed internet" on the box. It would also have been nice if your customer service staff could have returned my phone call as they promised.

Thanks StuartMW. I got the file downloaded before the link was removed, but it seems that Garmin sort of hopes I won't be able to use this one either. Sigh.

Good for you :) I use GarminMapUpdater (PC version) to get my map updates. Garmin only wants people to use Garmin Express, As SUSSAMB said the former sometimes works where the latter won't. Can't hurt to try.
