Mac Not Recognizing or Connecting to Forerunner 920xt

A couple days ago I plugged my forerunner 920xt into the computer. The 920 gets the charging and usb screen like it normally does when plugged into the computer. The computer acts like it isn't plugged in though. Nothing happens on the computer at all. If I open finder the 920 isn't even listed like an external drive. When I disconnect the 920 it is basically frozen. I have to hold down the power button for a while to get it to turn off then I turn it back on and everything seems fine. I don't know what to do. I have tried uninstalling Garmin Express and reinstalling it but that doesn't seem to be helping. I also tried "adding a new device" in Garmin Express and it also acts like I don't have anything plugged in. Very annoyed. I sync with Garmin Connect through my phone mostly so it isn't huge deal but I don't like that it isn't working. I also have never been able to get the wifi on the watch to work. What should I do?!

I am sorry that you are having trouble with your 920XT. Does the device display in Disk Utility? If it does, you can try doing a verify and repair on the drive. Make sure not to format the drive though as formatting the device on a Mac will most likely cause the device to not function at all. To verify/repair the disk, please follow the instructions in the FAQ here: How do I run a check disk or disk utility on my Garmin mass storage device?

If this does not solve the problem or the device does not display in Disk Utility, please make sure you have followed the instructions in the FAQ below:
Why is my Garmin device not communicating with Garmin Mac applications?

If you are still having trouble, please contact Product Support by phone.

I too notice the behavior of the MAC not recognizing that the 920XT has been plugged in. 920 gets the charging/usb screen, but the mac doesn't recognize that it is a device. It does not show up in disk utility either. Takes 10-15 plug/unplugs and then it might show up.

contrary to what I am quoting my 920Xt does NOT lockup.

Bottom line is computer does not think 920 is plugged in.
  • I should add that I just tested connecting my 920Xt to my Windows 7 PC with latest version of Garmin Express, and have no problems. Seems to be a mac thing.
  • Make sure to avoid external USB hubs and USB ports on the Keyboard or the Monitor when connecting the 920xt to the Mac.

Yea, i Had read that before. None of that in the mix. Additionally, my garmin nuvi, and 2 vivosmart bands all connect just fine via usb on my mac.

    I opened a case.

I'm also having the exact same issue. The 920xt shows up for maybe 20 seconds if at all in disk utility then disappears. That happens maybe once every 20 times I plug the watch in. Most of the time it doesn't recognize it at all. This is also happening now with my Edge 510. I have not been able to sync either of them successfully using express on the Mac. I don't have any USB hubs, monitors, etc. connected, it's just my MacBook Pro. I tried all the troubleshooting steps mentioned above but none seem to work. Any other ideas or things to try? Is there an update in the works?

I had some success with this over the holiday. I did some research, and it seems that are a lot of similar complaints out in the wild with USB sticks in general not being recognized by Apple computers. One test that should be run, and maybe Garmin can add this to their FAQ, is to boot the MAC into Recovery mode (Command + R). Go into disk utility, and then try connecting your watch. I suspect it will probably work, and work everytime, like mine did. Recovery mode reboots your MAC into a bare bones version of the operating system with no additional software. Then reboot back into normal mode, and if the problem comes back, this indicates that the Garmin device is fine, and the computer is fine, but there is some software or software settings on the Apple computer that are interfering. My Macbook Pro is 4 years old, and went through 4 versions of operating system upgrades plus just general use.

The fix for my situation was to make sure all my data was backed up with Time Machine to a external disk, then I booted back into recovery, erased the entire hard drive, and reinstalled the operating system from scratch. Then I restored only my documents, music, movies, etc, from the time machine backup, and reinstalled the applications I needed from the Appstore. Now that I have done that, my 920 has no problems connecting every time.

I dont believe this to be a problem with just the 920XT, but any of the Garmin watches and Apple computers. I believe something changed in the lastest couple software updates from Apple that has caused issues software/settings that existed on the computer prior to that.

    I hope this helps others.

I too am having this exact same issue, though I did get the wifi to work once on the watch.

Doesn't show up in Disk Utility

Currently am simply trying to get the GPS update to go so I can have an accurate run tomorrow.

Garmin, please give us some guidance other than "follow the guides" - they simply do not work for specific issues like this.
  • I get very wary when people tell me to 'destroy' my computer to fix things.

There's a great llittle app called App Delete that you can use to remove programs completely from any Mac. What I suggest you do is get hold of it and install it. Delete/remove your device from Garmin Express. Trash Garmin Express and let App Delete remove all of the files when prompted. Reinstall GE. Re-pair your device.

    See if that works.

    Philip,

I definitely don't want you(or anyone else) to do something you don't know how to do or want to do. I only documented what worked for me. By all means if you can make it work another way go for it. The main reason for my update was to highlight the fact that the 920XT is not at fault, even though testing appeared to make it the culprit.

My original advice still stands however for booting into Recovery mode, which is a non-destructive activity, and test making the USB connection with your watch. If it works, and works every time, then you can be assured that you have a software problem on your Apple computer, and not a problem with your watch.
