Unable to download firmware update via either Garmin Express or WebUpdater

I just bought a Nuvi 2789 and am attempting to install updates to both the firmware and maps. I currently have FW 3.50 and am trying to install 5.30 (http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=6799), along with updating maps from North America 2015.10 to 2015.20. When I try using Garmin Express, the progress bar for the firmware fills up and restarts multiple times, then gives me a download error.

When I try using WebUpdater, the small download window flashes open and closed, and then tells me there was an error downloading the firmware.

I can't get the map update to start without the firmware first updating, although I was able to download the new map and BaseCamp to my PC by cancelling the firmware once it started. This still did not actually install the map to my Nuvi, though.

I am using an administrative account and have tried running both programs explicitly with admin rights, forcing the programs through windows firewall (win 7 64), and modifying the Garmin core service as noted in several other threads.

Any ideas?

I've got exactly the same thing - got a 2599, just won't download 5.30 - looks like it is doing it, but gets to the end then says 'can't communicate with the Garmin update server'. Tried webupdate, Express and Dashboard, all the same. Funny thing is, it has successfully updated my maps and lots of other updates, just that one bombs out - it is only 38mb so should be no issue. Just tried again, same same :(

Hi guys, I got Garmin 2589 and I can confirm all problems mentioned here.

There is no option in GE for installing new maps Europe 2015.20 and I have this bug confirmed from Garmin Express support. They created case for this but it can take longer time. This is the message from customer service:

I have created a case for this issue. Since these are rare and very low in number it will probably take a while before the database will get updated. The maps preloaded on the device are by no means old or out of date. They came out around March of 2014. If you are going on a trip there would probably be very little difference between the 2015.10 on the Nuvi and 2015.20 which is the current version.

As soon as I hear that the issue is corrected I will test it to confirm, then email you.

And yes, I'm also unable to install new FW 5.30.

I think guys from Garmin are joking with us with this new series. Full of bugs.

  • Possibly a temporary problem with the Garmin servers. I'd leave it until tomorrow and try again.

I'm not sure. I've checked logs:

So I see there is problem with MD5 checksum.

I have the same problem with a new 2589LMT I bought yesterday.
I did manage to update the maps and voice file but not the Firmware update to 5.30.

Hi cwog, how did you manage to update the maps?

I'm unable to do that. GE doesn't offer me any map updates.

The Garmin Express screen offered a map update as well as the firmware and a voice file and a time file - so I selected all and went away - all finished apart from the firmware update - I tried it with the Webupdate program, it only offered the firmware as a mandatory update., but by then I had the map update under way.

Lucky guy. I'm still waiting for Garmin to fix this.

    Good luck.

That would make sense, it downloads it, tries to verify the checksum then fails so the whole thing stops - so until Garmin sort that out, nobody will be getting 5.30

So I was able to get the map update to download and install today simply because when i plugged my garmin in, the 5.3 firmware update did not initially get detected. Since the map was the only update available, it downloaded and installed right away. By the time it finished, the 5.30 update was back and still not downloading.
