Express/Webupdater + rogue install

Now that I have Express installed, do I need to keep Webupdater, or will Express handle all the device updates I need for my Edge 500?

Also, every time I power up my Mac, it tries to install Express from scratch. I don't understand why - I even deleted the installer disk image from my hard drive, but it is still going on. Any ideas?

    installer in Apps Folder

Express will handle the updates for the Edge. The other issue sounds like the Express Installer was copied into the Applications folder on the Mac. See the FAQ: How do I install Garmin Express on the computer? to reinstall.

No. I have the same problem and the installer is definitely NOT in the apps folder. Garmin Express is (as it should be according to the installation instructions.
  • Can't add anything to your problem. However, we have 2 iMacs here with Mavericks and 2 910XTs and 2 separate installs of Express, uploading to 2 different GC accounts and no problems. We do see GS firing up on install on occasion, but it looks to only happen when there is an update to install. Certainly does not happen every time the computers are booted. I also have GE installed on a MacBook Pro uploading data from the 910s to a separate account for research purposes, again without issue.

So, it does work. Maybe the problem lies with something you have installed?
  • Express might be trying to install the update file it stores though I can't see how it would continually try to install the same version. Go to ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express/AppUpdates/ and delete any .dmg files. Restart the Mac and see if that doesn't fix it.

  • Curt,

I have also been having this problem. I tried your solution by removing the .dmg file from that location. When I rebooted my Mac, I had the same installer window open up trying to install Garmin Express even though it is already installed, and when I went back into the ~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express/AppUpdates folder the .dmg file was back again.
  • Did you Empty the trash after sending it to the trash? I tried putting a bunch of old Express dmg files in my AppUpdates folder to see if I can reproduce this issue and haven't been able too. What is the file name that you have in there that is coming back?

  • The file that kept showing up was GarminExpressInstaller.dmg. I deleted it again, emptied the trash and rebooted. Once I logged in it didn't launch and try to install and when I went back into the AppUpdates folder it did not reappear. Thank you for your help.
  • I'm going to go over a wide variety of "different" scenarios that may cause the issue described.

    1. [Garmin Express] / [Garmin Express Installer] must be [Ejected] either from the [Side Bar] / [Desktop] or [Disk Utility].
    2. Please go into [Disk Utility] and look for any [GarminExpress.dmg] or [GarminExpressInstaller.dmg] file under the mounted system disks. If you see it listed please right-click on the item and Eject. This should leave no entries for Garmin Express in the list.
    3. Also ensure that no Garmin Express Installer .dmg files have made their way onto a removal hard disk or other flash based media.
    4. Ensure that you are running the latest Garmin Express client. At the time of this post the current Mac version is: 3.2.17.0 - version numbers are subject to change at any point. If you are not running the current version please go to: http://garmin.com/express and download/install the latest version, then review all of these steps.
    5. Do a spotlight search without quotes for these two files: "GarminExpress.dmg" / "GarminExpressInstaller.dmg" then click on "Show all in Finder". Find each and every Garmin Express Installer .dmg and move them to your [Trash] after you ensured they are Ejected. Be sure to [Empty] your trash.
    6. Click on your [Apple] logo in the upper left corner of your Mac [Menu bar] and open [System Preferences...] > [Users] > [Unlock Padlock] > [Login Items] > If you see any Garmin Express Installer entries or Express .dmg files listed please remove them from the Login item list by clicking each one and clicking the [-].
    7. Click on [Finder] from the [Dock] > [Go] from the Mac [Menu Bar] > [Goto Folder...] > enter the following path without quotes and click [Go] "~/Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express/AppUpdates/". Drag each .dmg file into the [Trash] and Empty it.
    8. Restart your computer and see if the issue still occurs.

Hopefully Garmin will fix GE so it works with the Monterra. Not being able to purchase downloadable maps is a real inhibitor for many potential customers.
