Express/Webupdater + rogue install

Now that I have Express installed, do I need to keep Webupdater, or will Express handle all the device updates I need for my Edge 500?

Also, every time I power up my Mac, it tries to install Express from scratch. I don't understand why - I even deleted the installer disk image from my hard drive, but it is still going on. Any ideas?
  • You don't have to keep WebUpdater but no harm if you do. I keep both. Not sure about why Express installs from scratch, hopefully someone else will.
  • Express will handle the updates for the Edge. The other issue sounds like the Express Installer was copied into the Applications folder on the Mac. See the FAQ: How do I install Garmin Express on the computer? to reinstall.

  • I have the same problem (start installing the application again instead of just opening). This is not a user installation error.

Your link above does not work?

Garmin and Mac have never liked each other. My guess is that you need to replace your mac app IT team. Always problem and never out of the box. After a few years of irritation I bought Parallells for Mac and can now install in Windows version on my Mac. Not ideal but tried of waiting for "we will fix in next release"-answers every time...

I agree, the Express application is a brilliant example of a VERY bad application. Each time I launch Express it will instead launch the installer/configurator AND launch the app.
This way I have one express running telling me I have updates to my Fenix 2, and one that like me to select which unit to use with Express. The second app won't find the GPS even though it is connected since instance number one has it already.
To me it's easy to solve since I can discover it fine and just kill the second instance, but for the average user it must be confusing.

It's one of the worst Applications actually on OS X. Web Updater is a brilliant app compared.

Regarding Mac and Garmin, I don't agree, Basecamp on Mac is better on Mac than Windows. Virb Edit is much much better on Mac as well.

The reason the Link above doesn't work is because the Express/Monterra/Edge1000 team also manages Garmins web site :)
In their infinite wisdom they have disabled all Support links to swedish users. The solution is to go to garmin.com and change to the US site. Then the link probably works.

I have tried editing the link so it might work now anyway:

    http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={f9ca1dc0-4020-11e2-e8a7-000000000000}

Link works just fine ... is something on your PC blocking it?

Read my comments above, support links on garmin.com doesn't work when you have other than US location set.
  • I don't see any real solutions to the original problem that was brought up. I just installed Garmin Express on my Mac and every time I start up or reboot the Mac, the installer reappears and asks to install the app again. I can confirm that the app is already installed and working fine. So how do I stop this PITA installation window every time my Mac boots up?

The UK ones do ... maybe just the Swedish ones having issues.
  • Since you are in Customer Care, there appears to be a bug in the installer that I was able to rectify but it isn't ideal for the average Mac user. First a little history:

I've installed Garmin Express a couple of months ago but deleted from the Applications folder after being annoyed with the constant installation window appearing every time my Mac booted up. Yesterday I re-installed the Garmin Express since I have the Edge 1000 and the new modern dashboard is dependent on the app for registering new devices. So today when I booted my computer, the installer issue reappeared.

Now to the intent of my post:
After re-booting a few times and still seeing the problem, I tried something different on a hunch. In the preference, I unchecked the "Auto launch at login" box and re-started the computer. Viola it didn't appear this time. So to see if the bug would come back again if I re-check the box, I restarted again and still the installation window does NOT appear anymore. So I think it has something to do with the auto launch at login not being set correctly when you first install the app thus the installer will keep appearing upon boot unless you uncheck the field.

Of course, this worked for me, so it will be interesting if others that reported this problem can try the method I did and get the same results.

Express will handle the updates for the Edge. The other issue sounds like the Express Installer was copied into the Applications folder on the Mac. See the FAQ: How do I install Garmin Express on the computer? to reinstall.

Thank you, JTOSBO00. That worked for me, too.
(I'm new to this thread, so I hadn't reported the problem previously.)
