MAC OSX Garmin Express won't enable wifi on Forerunners @ version 3.1.1.0

You must use the Windows version of Garmin Express Fit to set up wifi on your new Forerunner (tried using FR620).

For Apple/MAC OSX users, you must have a Windows computer, bootcamp or virtual machine. Here is where you get the Garmin Express FIT application that you will need to set up any new wifi network you want to connect with:

Garmin, please fix Garmin Express version 3.1.1.0 to allow wifi enablement or update the documentation. It is not clear to MAC OSX users that they must use a Windows application (G.Ex. FIT) to get wifi to work on their newly purchased Garmin Forerunner.

I wish I had known this before I dropped $450 on a watch that doesn't completely work on my Mac. WTF GARMIN. HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS? You should be better than this.
  • MAC OSX Garmin Express won't enable wifi on Forerunners @ version 3.1.1.0

I was able to successfully setup the wifi on a Forerunner 620 with Garmin Express 3.1.3 on a iMac 10.9.1. Garmin Express 3.1.3 was released today but the release notes do not mention fixing any issues with setting up the Wifi on Forerunner 620. Update Express and make sure the Forerunner 620 is up to date as well then setup the wifi network again.

  • Thanks for letting us know it's possible, Curt! I've updated to the current version of Garmin Express but I don't see where in the app I can set up wi-fi. I've searched the forums and didn't find any instructions either. Could you please tell me where the wi-fi setup is in Garmin Express for Mac? Thanks!

  • ATJAYWALKER- Garmin Express is the correct application for setting up WIFI on your device. I noticed the link you provided in your post was for the older Garmin Express Fit application.

ALINUFIRE- We customize the user experience based on the device that is connected to Express. If you have not connected a forerunner 620 the wifi options are not available to you. Wifi setup is prompted when adding the forerunner 620 to the client.
  • Thanks, SMEBrett - I can now see the Manage Networks link and have no problem entering my network info in to Garmin Express -yay! However, Garmin Express still only sees my 620 when it's in the USB cradle. When I look at the 620 Wi-Fi settings page, it tells me to "set up wi-fi using garmin express". Could you please tell me what step I'm missing here to get the wi-fi working? I've also tried restarting both the 620 and Garmin Express. I do appear to have the latest firmware and software for both the 620 (v2.60) and Garmin Express (v 3.1.3.0).

Thanks in advance for all your help!

    Cheers,

  • Before you can upload an activity wirelessly, you must have a run saved to your device, and the timer must be stopped. Once the Wi-Fi is set up in Express the device will attempt to upload your activities Garmin Connect after each run. You can also press the Connect button on the Forerunner 620 to start uploading your data, a Wi-Fi connection will be attempted.

To verify Wi-Fi is is turned on select Settings>Wireless>Wi-Fi>On

  • Hi, Shane - this still isn't working for me: As before, I have activities saved on my 620 and the timer is stopped. I clicked on Manage Networks in Express, and entered my network data. That network has a lock icon and a star icon by it. When I push the Connect button on the 620 it still says "set up wi-fi using garmin express". Is there another step I need to take to get the network data to the 620? I'm a pretty technically oriented person and this has been really surprisingly unclear to me, so I really appreciate your help!

UPDATE: I deleted the 620 from Garmin Express and re-added it, and now the 620 actually tried to find my network (yay!) but can't (sigh). Any tips on getting the 620 to find my network? I'm certain I entered the correct password and have the 620 in a good spot for wi-fi coverage.

    Thanks!
  • You must use the Windows version of Garmin Express Fit

ATJAYWALKER - I apologize. I missed the fact that you were using Garmin Express Fit instead of Garmin Express. Where you able to get Garmin Express installed and updated from the link Brett provided? The latest version is only available through the update in the application. See the FAQ: How do I update Garmin Express?

Hi have the same problems trying to connect my new 620, I have the latest software 'Garmin Express' and I have put in my wifi details under 'Manage Networks' in the Garmin Express app,
and I still get the same error 'Set up WiFi using Garmin Express' I have the latest software on the watch and the app is the latest and it still does not work, I have also tried restarting but nothing!
Think this must be a common problem, sync fine on USB and connects to my iPhone on bluetooth.
  • ALINUFIRE and HARVESTER71 - What type of WIFI setup do you have? A 802.11b/g/n will work if it's backwards compatible from N. If you have your WIFI set up on 802.11N you will have connection issues so please check this.
