MAC OSX Garmin Express won't enable wifi on Forerunners @ version 3.1.1.0

You must use the Windows version of Garmin Express Fit to set up wifi on your new Forerunner (tried using FR620).

For Apple/MAC OSX users, you must have a Windows computer, bootcamp or virtual machine. Here is where you get the Garmin Express FIT application that you will need to set up any new wifi network you want to connect with:

Garmin, please fix Garmin Express version 3.1.1.0 to allow wifi enablement or update the documentation. It is not clear to MAC OSX users that they must use a Windows application (G.Ex. FIT) to get wifi to work on their newly purchased Garmin Forerunner.

Garmin Express Customer Care Agent, I was bought a Forerunner 620 as a gift from my husband. However we were not informed we could not use the wi-fi with our MAC. Are you able to confirm if this issue has been fixed as yet, prior to us returning to the store.

I totally agree Gravityrider having found myself in the same situation.
  • I think there may be some confusion as to how Wi-Fi on the Forerunner 620 works. When using Wi-Fi from the device, the Mac itself is ignored entirely and the data is sent directly from the 620 to Garmin Connect through your wireless router. If you are currently getting the message to set up Wi-Fi using Garmin Express, you will need to connect your device via USB for the initial wireless setup.

First, please make sure you're using the latest Garmin Express for Mac from here.

If the Forerunner 620 is currently added in Express:

    • Click the Device tab
    • Click Delete Device from Express
    • Select Keep in Garmin Connect

    After the device is removed:

    • Attach the clip to the Forerunner 620 and plug it into your Mac
    • After the volume GARMIN appears on the Desktop/in Finder, add the device in Express
    • You will be prompted to create a new Connect account or sync to an existing one
    • You will then be prompted to associate a wireless network to the 620
    • Select a detected network from the "+" drop down
    • Select the appropriate security type (WEP, WPA, WPA2)
    • Input the router password if any security type was selected other than Open
    • Click Save

You will now be able to eject the Forerunner 620 and use the Wi-Fi feature from your device.

After that, if you still get that message on the device make sure you are selecting the correct network, the right security type, and entering the case-sensitive network password if it is not an Open network.

Huge fan of Garmin 410 and was really looking forward to syncing the 620 using WiFi. NO LUCK on a Mac despite following these instructions (Garmin Express version 3.2.5.0 and Device version 2.7). Error message... "Network error. Try again later"

Looking at websites, I see internet reports that WiFi doesn't work if configured on a Mac. So let me understand this...Garmin releases a "Garmin Express" version for the Mac that doesn't actually work with the FR620. One only sees that "Windows is required" when going to the Garmin website.

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER FOR A PRODUCT and its going back until Garmin can get its act together. Tweeting this to followers to see if they've had the same miserable experience.

UPDATE: It appears the FR620 will sync with the WiFi network but only if a guest WiFi network is created that uses "garmin" as the ssid name. Garmin reps have remained unresponsive to customer service and the only way I figured this out was to read several dozen web posts on other sites.

    Agree

Garmin Express 3.2.13.0 won't do it either. How to lose friends.

What type of wireless network are you running? There may just be a settings change that might be needed in your wireless router. See FAQ: Why do I receive a network error when connecting my Forerunner 620 to Wi-Fi?

    Thanks ATJ.
    I'm using a Mac on 10.7.5 with garmin express 3.2.15.0 and a FR 620 on 2.9.
Every time I set up my wifi via express it would show the network and act like it synced, but when I disconnected the 620 then tried to sync, it would tell me to connect to express. I pretty much re-built my router from the inside out trying every combination of config before finding your link.
Downloaded your app, launched a windows virtual machine on my Mac and synced seamlessly on the windows side.
    Thanks again!
