Why is Garmin Express SOOOOOOOOOOO Slow in Finishing? Why does Honda Foist This Product On Its Customers?

First, I am not talking to the Garmin Fanboy and -girls, who claim to have a perfect download experience and try to blame the errors on the Users' computers.  If Garmin distributed a competent product, it would not (a.) take four hours for the downloadl to finish and (b.) at the very least there would be some diagnostic abilities by the software.  This is leaivng aside the imcompetence of insisting that we continue to us MS-DOS FAT.

In any event, I have had several successful downloads, but what happens more and more and more is that the download goes along quite well, until 80 or 80 or 95%, and then it slows down to a crawl.  Sometimes I cancel it and start over and it does the same thing.  Sometimes I just give up.  Eventually ... sometimes after two days, the download works.  No rhyme or reasom to it.

Right now my Mac Studio is @ 94.6%, installing at 3209.0 MB/s ... with a perpertual "1 minute" time remaining.  It's been like th is for 10 minutes, except that the MB/s is slowing slowing down..

If the answer is that I need to re-configure my Mac Studio's entire software to accommodate this appalling software program, that is just an admission by Garmin that the App is defective.

Honda should change vendors.

  • Garmin Express writes a log in this file: Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express/Logs/Service_<date and time>.txt

That might give you some hint about what's happening.

  • Then put this point to Honda. Map downloads work perfectly for me and have in over 10 years of using Garmin

  • But it's not Honda's problem, is it?  There's no way Honda can resolve an issue with Garmin software.  And while downloads may work fine for you (and me), there appear to be a number of questions on these forums about slow downloads.  Just as I had to resolve my own issue with my Drive 50 (and then posted a solution) so there might be some as yet unexpected but simple issue with downloads.  Just on reading the logs of my own recent downloads, I did notice something which might (or equally, might not) have a bearing so it would have been interesting to see the log file from a failed download attempt.

Still, I guess the OP just wanted to vent rather than find an actual solution (that might also help others).

BTW. While I have your attention: How can I change my user name from a string of digits to something sensible?  TIA.

  • I was referring to the comment about Honda changing vendors rather than Honda resolving the issue. Don't believe from his comments he's looking for a solution as it's more of a rant than a plea for help.

As for changing your user name you'll need to contact one of the Admin team.

  • Thanks for the info about name changes.

I don't think Honda will change suppliers, and even if they do, I would imagine it's going to take a long time, so OP isn't going to get a quick solution to his problem.  I think there may be a clue in the log files...

    Cheers

  • My wife and I have Garmins as well as both my sons. I update all four at the same time, one right after the other using the same laptop, cord and connected to the same server. Usually, one will download just fine and sometimes two but you never know which ones it will be. Sometimes I can't get any to download. Never has all four downloaded quickly. I'm no expert but I don't think it has anything to do on my end. I'm guessing from reading a bunch of threads about slow downloads and seeing your name in nearly all of them, that you work for Garmin. With our situation, I'm thinking our solution will be Google maps. It's more accurate than Garmin, free and no downloads. It's wonderful it works for you all the time. The issue is most people don't want to spend the time pissing with our computers to download Garmin. And we shouldn't have to, especially when there are no issues downloading from other sites. Makes no sense. If you're an IT person and trained on programming or working on computers, I guess it's a breeze. And you simply posting that "map downloads have worked perfectly for you and have in over 10 years of using Garmin" isn't helpful at all. People have lives and are busy. If people can download from other places without a problem, they expect to download from Garmin... without the need of pissing around with their computer system. It's not 1990, the technology is there to make it happen but it's obvious Garmin doesn't want to use that technology. As a company, it's not in their best interest to continue ignoring the problem.

  • Late reply, but Honda is moving to HERE Maps for updates.
