Garmin Express only showing old Fenix software update (8.45) but watch showing latest update (10.44)

Hi all,

Last week I bought a Fenix 7 Solar. I updated it as soon as I got the watch - to what I thought was the latest software.

But yesterday I noticed that I didn't have the latest tech e.g. training readiness (I think that's what it's called?)

So I checked the situ on Garmin Express. This is where it gets weird.

Garmin Express says that the software version on my watch is 8.45 and is "up to date". I know there have been plenty of subsequent software updates since 8.45.

But on my WATCH it says my software is version 10.44. I think this is indeed the latest version.

Even though my watch *says* I have the latest software, I don't have any of the latest tools, leading me to assume I have the 8.45 version of the software, which is what Garmin Express is telling me I have.

No matter what I do I can't get the watch to update properly / get Garmin Express to recognise updates post 8.45.

Garmin support told me to find something called REMOTESW in my Garmin folder on my Mac and delete the files within this folder.

After downloading Android File Transfer I was able to access this folder and delete the one file inside it.

I then rebooted everything and tried again.

But I got the same result. Garmin Express (and Garmin Connect online) both say I have the latest software: Version 8.45.

What's going on?? Broken watch?? Or is there an easy fix that I'm missing??

FYI I should say that the watch works fine in its current state....it's just very annoying to have this problem and not have the latest tools!

Thanks in advance, A

  • A thought (or silly idea)  , why not try the beta process as I see there is a more recent Alpha release for the Fenix , maybe that will "unstick" the situation?

  • Thanks SMR! I actually did enroll in the Beta process a few days ago to see if it would make a difference. But nothing has been pushed to my watch yet via Wifi and Garmin Express doesn't change from saying that 8.45 is the latest update. I gotta confess though - I'm a newbie Garmin user - and don't really understand the Alpha / Beta thing....

Is there anything I can do apart from signing up to Beta and waiting for an update to present itself?

I was also thinking - could this be a space issue? I've got the European maps downloaded and a couple of courses -- nothing major. But Express is saying I'm about 80% of my capacity already. Could this be preventing an update from coming through?

  • FYI deleting maps to free up space doesn't work, just tried it :( :(

  • Have you tried removing the watch from GE?  Then uninstall GE. Reinstall GE. Add your watch again.

  • Tried. Doesn’t work. Weirdly when I opened garmin express today it said it had two updates. But then it wouldn’t recognise my watch. So I closed GE, connected my watch and opened the programme again. This time GE recognised my watch but the updates had vanished. Now it just says 8.45 is up to date. Infuriating!!!

  • Unfortunately I have a FR 955 and the beta program is not yet as sophisticated as that of the Fenix. If I understand it correctly the Alpha versions are actually downloaded and then installed "manually" onto the watch probably using Android File transfer. Maybe you should post on the Fenix 7 Forum possibly a wider audience there than in this forum?

  • Have you looked in Settings, System, Software Update to see if there is an option to install a downloaded update?

The main update file actually goes into the Garmin folder, not any subfolders. Have a look and see if you have any .gcd files in the Garmin folder. If there are, delete them.

The last thing to try before contacting Garmin Support is probably a Reset to Default settings. If you do this ensure the watch is removed from your Garmin Account in Garmin Express, Garmin Connect Mobile and Garmin Connect Interweb.
