Garmin Express will not recognize Garmin Fenix 5X - ????

I've reinstalled Garmin Express a few times after first not being able to get it to recognize the Fenix 5X - plugging it in to each USB on my MBP a few different times. After reinstalling GE, still no luck. What next???? Any ideas?

Not sure if I'm having the same issue.

Garmin fenix 5X into a PC. Never any problems with the connection for power but was having trouble right from the start with the connection for USB and therefore Basecamp, coming and going for no obvious reason. Got it to work in the first few months by holding the cable in a certain position.

Tried plugging it into the PC for the first time in a couple of months this morning and the computer kept making the "USB Connected" noise, followed quickly by the noise indicating disconnection. Couldn't hold the connection long enough to upload anything from Basecamp which was annoying as I was heading out for a walk. Finally, I just cleaned the connector slot on the watch with soap, water, and a toothbrush. I managed to flick out some junk and flecks of paint. Then I dried it carefully and connected it to a new different computer, and I don't know if this makes a difference but i connected it to a USB port that is separately powered.

    Now everything is working again.

My theory is that the connector is not particularly well designed and even small amounts of junk in the cavity cause it to not make a secure connection between the contacts. Which is why it would connect then disconnect if it was moved at all. No idea if this is true but my watch is working.

Lots of issues with Bluetooth connectivity. Maybe a conflict? Turned off Bluetooth on the MacBook Pro (High Sierra). Worked! Takes about 15sec to connect to Mac and show up in Finder window. Doesn't matter (yay!):
    • If the watch is on or off when plugging in USB to Mac
    • If Garmin Express is running or not
    • Whether phone is on and watch is connected to Connect app
    • What watchface I'm using - so finding that hypothesis false.
    Feedback welcome.

I was having this same problem. MBP not recognizing my Fenix 5x. I even sent the watch back to Garmin and they sent me out a new refurbished Fenix 5x. The refurbished Fenix 5x had the same problem. I even asked them to send out a new USB cord and still the same problem. The fix for me was simply unplugging the watch from my MBP. Turning the watch off. Then plugging the watch back into my MBP and turning the watch back on. Wait a few seconds and it will show up.

I've performed this procedure multiple times now. Turning the watch off. Then plugging the watch back into the MPB. Then turning the watch back on. The watch is now being consistently recognized by the MBP. Also Garmin Express is recognizing the watch.

This is working for me but inconsistently. This is a pretty frustrating problem. Initially I assumed I had a cable problem but from the stories here it sounds like probably a firmware issue. I'm surprised Garmin hasn't found a real solution.

For me, this occurs on both my Macbook Air and iMac, btw.

I thought this was just my watch, I cannot use Garmin Connect to connect reliably to the 5x, it finds it then as soon as I attempt to update it "Not Connected" message. Â USB says it's connected and charges fine. Â So is it an App problem, USB or High Sierra Compatibility. Garmin, why isn't there any response or corrective action? This is an expensive watch and it should work seemlessy with the MacOs, works well well IOS!!!
