Garmin Express hangs on opening MacBook

I can't get Garmin Express to open and register my Edge 800. It works on my wife's Mac Book Air but not on my MacBook Pro. I have upgraded to El Capitan. Removed all previous G Exp folders and tried reinstalling using both Safari and Firefox. After downloading G Exp I click on the teardrop icon and then a rectanglar icon opens but just hangs on the screen. I have 25 gb of disc space and 2gb of ram. Patience is wearing thin. Please help.
  • I am sorry you are still having trouble, but the latest version of Garmin Express works correctly on most compatible Mac computers. I have it installed on both Mac OSX 10.11.4 and Mac OSX 10.10.5 and have never experienced this issue. However, every person's Mac (or PC for that matter) setup is different from every other person's setup. They will have different programs, settings, internet connections, different ways they are backed up, and so on. The issue you are experiencing is specific to your setup and a handful of other setups.

With remote assistance (where you always have complete control over the computer and our connection to it), we can help you find the cause of the problem and correct it. However, if you are uncomfortable with remote assistance then we can try steps without it. Because we can't see your computer, these steps may be limited. If you called ">Product Support">Product Support and went through the provided steps but the issue can't be fixed without remote assistance, then unfortunately you will need to use a different computer.

We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.

hahaha... I just replied to this and the forum page didn't load, but then Garmin Connect is so badly written and dependent on AJAX it isn't a wonder other Garmin web sites don't work as you'd expect...

I'm not going to re-type everything, but in summary, the totally objective Apple Instruments developer tooling feature "Automatically Time Profile Spinning Applications" triggers for Garmin Express, but oddly this forum doesn't like people to post stack traces (despite them being objective and rather useful for software engineers to determine root cause) so I don't know what else can be done. I did notice Console.app entries reporting a failure to connect to 40.114.241.141 on port 443 - this seems to be dc.services.visualstudio.com which in turn seems to be Microsoft Insights, so Garmin are tracking activity/behaviour, I'd rather hope that a failure to connect to something not necessary isn't the cause?

hmm... odd that this is the second of two posts I've made that have been edited... Seriously unimpressed with Garmin, time to move to another brand that embraces customer input rather than censors it I think...

The posts were edited as it is not necessary to quote the post directly above yours. It clutters up the thread and can make it difficult to follow. That is the only edit that has been made on your posts by the Express Team. If other edits are made, say for language, that is included when the edit is made.

  • Garmin Express has been Garmin Express Crasher for months now. It will sync, but if you link to Garmin Connect afterwards, the program will reliably crash.

Maybe everyone should post their every crash dump here, the maintenance effort required to clear out the Gigabytes of data out of the forum might be an incentive for them to finally do something.

Have to echo the sentiment about being seriously underwhelmed by Garmin's SW and FW quality and customer orientation. Time for somebody else to step up to the plate.
  • Have you guys called Garmin's support line?

My frustrating issue was finally resolved by creating a second admin profile on my Mac.

Something about the personalization of the Mac gets in the way of GE connecting properly.

    It works fine now.

So at least try calling the support line. They're totally legit.
  • It appears that the cause of this issue has been found. For those of you that are experiencing this issue, please try the following:
    • Open Finder
    • Click Go
    • Hold the Option key and click Library
    • Open the Caches folder
    • Drag com.microsoft.applicationinsights to the trash
    • Restart Garmin Express (you may need to quit Express from Activity Monitor or restart the Mac)

  • Jason, sorry, but the solution doesn't seem to work. On my IMac, El Capitan, I did follow your suggestion. Right after opening Express, it will recreate the Microsoft file, and freezes just like it always does.
