Garmin Express hangs on opening MacBook

I can't get Garmin Express to open and register my Edge 800. It works on my wife's Mac Book Air but not on my MacBook Pro. I have upgraded to El Capitan. Removed all previous G Exp folders and tried reinstalling using both Safari and Firefox. After downloading G Exp I click on the teardrop icon and then a rectanglar icon opens but just hangs on the screen. I have 25 gb of disc space and 2gb of ram. Patience is wearing thin. Please help.

I have been having same issue with my MAC , the spinning ball appears soon after I launch Express. Sometimes I can upload my workouts before it happens but often not. I hoped 4.1.18 might be a fix but if anything it has got worse than 4.1.17
  • Mac Garmin Express 4.1.18.0 hangs

I am having the same issue after upgrading to Garmin Express 4.1.18.0 on my iMac. I've tried re-installing the application, as noted in this chain.

The application loads, but shortly after that (maybe < 5 secs) the application becomes unresponsive, and just get the spinning color wheel icon. Only way to exit seems to be to Force Quit the application.

I cannot seem to get any activities to sync at all. Very frustrating.

I have done everything that Garmin suggest. Have cleared every garmin file on my computer and keychain then tried to re-install. The same things happens every time, it hangs when the rectangular Garmin emblem shows and doesn't go any further.

Tried connecting my edge 800 to my wife's macbook air and it works perfectly.

I do not have a firewall operating and I have removed security.

    Help!
  • Is Garmin Express running long enough to access the Preferences and turn off the run in background feature? If so, try turning that function off and see if that makes a difference.

Is it possible to prevent Garmin Express from running in the background on my computer?

If you are still having difficulties, contact Product Support by phone for in depth troubleshooting.

I have managed to disable the run in background mode so I have to start Express by clicking the icon when I need it but it will still hang within a few minutes of starting it manually. I usually manage to sync my device and transfer the workout before Express stops responding , but it is hit and miss and usually I might have to use force quit after the spinning ball appears multiple times and keep trying again until I see my workout on the web. Sometimes it says it synced and I see transfer activity but then workout does not appear on web even if Express did not appear to become unresponsive before the transfer completed. But I have also seen it start transfer and then get hung on Express app screen , ie blue circle with arrows you see during transfer just stuck and device eventually gave up and went to sleep. I am sure once or twice I have seen the device shutdown when I tried to transfer and wondered if Express was somehow causing device to shutdown prematurely. I wasted over 30 minutes after a weekend workout trying to get my workout up on the web, Express kept becoming unresponsive. So bottom line is disabling run in background mode does not really stop Express becoming unresponsive, it just means you don't have a permanently hung application you have to quit even on the days when you don't use Express.
  • Garmin Express has been hanging for me on Mac OS X 10.9.5 Since 3/16.

I've been getting hangs since 3/16..
