Nuvi 2599 not connecting with MacBook Pro running Yosemite

When I plug in my Nuvi 2599 to the MacBook Pro I cannot get any connection, despite the link between the 2 being apparently good electrically.

I plug the device into a USB port and the computer and after some 30 seconds the Garmin icon comes up on the desktop and Garmin Express fires up.

However the software steadfastly refuses to recognise the device at all , just stating that it is not connected, and nothing that I do makes any difference. I have tried rebooting the computer, starting up with the Garmin connected, switching the device off and on , all to no avail.

I am running version 8.2 of the software, and it confirms that I am up to date.

I know that the Garmin is nearly full with only a few MB of disc free , so I purchased an 8GB micro SD card to aid, and this gets recognised as a "No Name" icon on the desk top. I have tried removing the card , but no difference. Has this installation affected the communication.

Just for completeness I also use Garmin Connect for my Edge 200 bike computer, has this possibly caused a conflict in any way?

I would be very grateful of any suggestion as this is getting me down a bit.
  • The fact you say your nuvi only has a few Mb free could be the issue. Are you able to connect it on another computer to free up some space? At the same time delete the GarminDevice.xml file from the Garmin folder. Now disconnect and switch the nuvi on.

Then try again on your Mac.

Thanks for the suggestion. Which files do you suggest deleting in order to free up space?

I have deleted the GarminDevice.xml file , then ejected the device , rebooted , but no difference alas.

  • There won't be any difference until you delete some files. What I suspect is happening is that the xml file isn't being written correctly due to lack of space, indeed if you check the file size it may be 0, and it's that file that identifies your unit to Express etc.

I'd delete (you may want to save them to your PC just in case you need them in future) all the unnecessary voice, vehicle, text, keyboard, help and EULA files, then delete the xml file again and then retry.

The xml file is indeed zero , so that is the problem identified.

I have tried deleting voice and vehicle files, and will now try rebooting

    Thanks for your help.

  • U can also dump everything in the GPX folder on the internal memory, i just checked with my 3598 and it it was almost 50Mb.

    Success

I am really very grateful indeed. After deleting some voice and vehicle files , and rebooting , the device did finally connect and I was able to perform a full update to the device.

It informs me that I now have 604MB of space on the device. Do you have any advice as to how I might alleviate this problem in the future? The 8GB micro SD card is still showing up as a "No Name" device on the desktop. Can this not boost the device's hard disk?

    Thanks again

  • It doesn't work that way, but you can save maps and other files to it. To free up space I normally install the junction view file to the sd card, but given that you have 604Mb of space that should be more than ample.
