Garmin Express fails to detect my Edge 800

Hi,

I've installed Garmin Express Version 4.1.7.0 (the latest version).

However, it doesn't detect my Edge 800 device. The device is connected to my laptop (running Windows 7 Enterprise Service Pack 1).

Windows Explorer can see the device and lists it as "Removable Disk (F:)". However, when I browse through the directory hierarchy, the Activities folder (and all of them) is empty. I know that's not the case as I have activities on there including one from this morning.

I'm sure it's not the USB cable as I used it to sync my Edge 800 last night at home on a different PC.

What do you recommend I try?

Thanks.

If you explore the contents of the device which you know to have data and there's nothing saved specifically the activities folder then there seems to be corruption on your device. I would recommend running a CHKDSK on the device. If it finds any corruption it should hopefully fix it. If this does not correct the issue you may need to Master Reset the device. see FAQ: How do I master reset my Edge 800?

  • Hi Mike,

I don't think it's likely to be that as the same symptom was present last time I tried (last week), but since then I've sync'd data just fine on my home PC.

Are there any known issues with the drivers and Windows 7 Enterprise SP1?

The device itself shows the activities, so must be reading them OK I reckon but I'll try the chkdsk.

    F:\>chkdsk
The type of the file system is FAT32.
The volume is in use by another process. Chkdsk
might report errors when no corruption is present.
    Volume Serial Number is 3333-6138
Windows is verifying files and folders...
File and folder verification is complete.
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

    3,956,801,536 bytes total disk space.
32,768 bytes in 1 hidden files.
    163,840 bytes in 5 folders.
    2,067,595,264 bytes in 2 files.
    1,888,976,896 bytes available on disk.

32,768 bytes in each allocation unit.
120,752 total allocation units on disk.
57,647 allocation units available on disk.
  • Given it says you have a 4GB filesystem on the Edge, there is definitely something amiss with the filesystem on the Edge (or at least how the Garmin USB driver is reporting it)

edit: it does say that it's in use by another process and it might report corruption... I'd wait until I got home and try it on the other PC.
  • I reconnected the device to clear the "Volume in use by another process" message.

    C:\>chkdsk F:
The type of the file system is FAT32.
    Volume Serial Number is 3333-6138
Windows is verifying files and folders...
File and folder verification is complete.
Windows has checked the file system and found no problems.

    3,956,801,536 bytes total disk space.

4GB is the size of the microSD card.

It's odd. On the other PC it's fine. It's detected by Garmin Express no problem, and I can sync activities.

It appears that you are running chkdsk on the SD card and not the Edge 800 itself. It sounds like you are using a work computer. Are you having a drive letter conflict with one of your network or other drives? Check Disk Management to see if there is a conflict and change the drive letter of the Edge 800.

  • Hrm...

If I take the SD card out, the device doesn't appear at all in Windows Explorer. So there's nothing to run the chkdsk on. I suppose that makes sense if Express can't see it; but I don't know why it wouldn't.

I had a look in device manager and it seems to think there is no driver installed for the device.

I downloaded drivers from https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591 and ran the Garmin USB Driver Setup Wizard. That all completed successfully, but Garmin Express still doesn't see the device, and Windows still reports no driver is installed. The "SD Card USB Device" is working OK as previously noted.

Mass-storage devices like the Edge 800 use Windows drivers, not the Garmin USB drivers. I am also running Win 7 Enterprise and when connecting an Edge 800, the Microsoft drivers load correctly.

  • No, there's no driver installed for the "Flash USB Device". Maybe it's disabled as part of the managed build. I'll put in a support ticket to the institution's IT service desk. Thanks.
  • Hi,

Just to update... Although all the USB drivers on my PC were supposedly available as part of the standard build, one or two of the default Microsoft ones didn't seem to be enabled. A guy from our IT department came and fiddled about on my laptop, and now everything's working.

    Hurrah! \o/
