305 - Express - There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect

Forerunner 305 with a brand new install of Garmin Express (have removed & reinstalled, same symptoms) give me completely unhelpful error message "There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect". Express recognizes 305 is connected. Connect has nothing in the sync queue.
Help!

The current USB version in the Device Manager is 2.3.1.0. The update in April just added digital signing for the Aviation Card Programmers, so your USB drivers are OK. The Error code 10 error can be caused by drivers or hardware. You've done your due diligence with the drivers. The device could be creating an error that Device Manager doesn't understand so its generating the error code 10. Try running the WebUpdater application to see if the 305 and computer can communicate. The WebUpdater will check the firmware version on the 305 and give you the option to reinstall it. If the reinstall works then you know the device and computer can communicate. If the WebUpdater cannot recognize the device then you're looking at a repair.

Ran webupdater & reinstalled v 2.90 (current on 305, apparently latest per webupdater). No code 10 error now. Tried re-running Express. Same result: There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect

Also, note that we know that the 305 is communicating with the PC since I can see the TCX files in Program Data > Garmin > CoreService > Devices> ######> Sync > FitnessHistory. I can see today's TCX file, so these aren't old files.

Seems like the issue is moving the TCX from my hard drive to Connect....what's the next troubleshooting step?
    Thanks!

I suggest you try to manually Import the files in the FitnessHistory folder. If you encounter one that will not upload it has corrupt data in it causing the error. Once you get all the data uploaded delete the 305 from Express and Master Reset it then add it again.

Login to your Connect Modern account then click on the menu icon on the left and click Activities. The use the Import link in the upper right to start importing the TCX files.

    How do I perform a reset on my Forerunner 305, 205, 301, 201 or 101?

Manual import of a recent file works fine so clearly the TCX file is getting from the 305 onto my PC. I tried all the stuff you suggested (which I tried when you suggested it before with no effect), did a new workout and then tried to sync. I am still getting the "There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect" message and no data on GC.

The TCX data gets to my PC just fine. Why is the data on my PC not transferring to Garmin Connect? (Yes, I am connected to the internet. Please don't send me generic instructions on how to tell if I am.)

I do not have a definitive answer to that question. The greatest success with all older fitness devices is to remove the device from Express and Connect, delete any remaining data on the PC, Master Reset the device then set everything up again. If you have done all that then I suggest you contact Garmin Support by phone for further investigation.

305 - Express - There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect

    Hello.

I have the same issue as described in : https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?252658-305-Express-There-was-an-error-syncing-with-Garmin-Connect

My Forerunner 305 is recognised by Garmin Express, Garmin Express start syncing, goes to the end very quickly (Forerunner 305 says that file have been sent) but no activity is avalaible anymore (excepted former ones) in my Garmin Connect online.

    Please help.

    Best.
    Seb.

    Hi,

same issue here. I can upload tracks directly from Forerunner 305 into BaseCamp and MapSource. Saved local files can then be imported into Garmin connect, but it does not work directly from the device via Express into Garmin connect.

I tried the trouble shooting advices twice but still I get the "There was an error syncing with Garmin connect" message.

    Any solutions for the issue?
  • I am sorry for the troubles. Since the GPS information appears to be in good shape there must be some corruption in another file type. There are several other configuration files that are a part of the information exchange between Express and Connect. Since you continue to have sync issue I suggest contacting Garmin Product Support by phone in your region. They should be able to investigate and resolve the issue.

Again, I am sorry for the troubles.

    Success!!!!

    AHA!!!

I'd been having the same issue with my 305 after getting a new computer (consistently received the "error syncing" message in Express). I've still been able to sync using the same version of Express on my old laptop however.

After reading through this thread I first tried deleting all the activities older than 1 month on my device, then removing it from Express and Connect and re-adding it. No improvement.

Then I went to the "Program Data > Garmin > CoreService > Devices>" folder that Euro6332 mentioned and noticed that there were .TCX files in the device folder all the way back to 2008, so apparently when you delete the device from Express it doesn't delete that folder. I confirmed this by removing the 305 again in Express, but the folder for it remained.
Next I deleted the folder for my 305, added it back in to Express, and this time it synced successfully!
Looking in the newly created device folder, there are now only 30 days worth of .TCX files as expected.

So thank you everyone for pointing me in the right direction, and hopefully this will help some people that are pulling their hair out trying to sync their device. Hopefully this gets fixed in a future version of the Express program as well.
  • I suspect the responses to this thread are misleading

Blah blah blah do x y z pointless steps..

You probably just want to follow the steps in my thread which unfortunately has been closed:
    https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?299791-Transfer-all-to-force-re-sync-on-Garmin-Express

Incidentally, I needed the function I don't anymore again today. This is despite the recent software update. Apparently in Garmin Devland it is impossible to get any error connnecting to Garmin connect.

On the plus side the two weekly fail keeps my watch free of data.

    To confirm, follow these steps:

    1) Ignore ALL postings / recommendations from Garmin customer service
    2) If you listen to them you're just wasting your life, and Garmin don't seem to car how many thousands (millions?) of user hours they waste
    3) Set the device to transfer all
    4) As this can take a long time its best to delete manually activities already on Connnect
    5) Restart Express - haha the irony of the name
