305 - Express - There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect

Forerunner 305 with a brand new install of Garmin Express (have removed & reinstalled, same symptoms) give me completely unhelpful error message "There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect". Express recognizes 305 is connected. Connect has nothing in the sync queue.
Help!

I am sorry for the troubles. There are no known issues with the Forerunner 305. They tend to be older and may have some corrupt data in older activities. I suggest you delete any activities older than 30 days from the watch then power cycle and try again. If it has been a couple of years since you have uploaded data from the 305 you might want to Master Reset it and get a fresh start.

    AIKIDICTED

Your install of Express is not brand new as both your 305's are added to your Connect Modern account. If you are having trouble syncing, delete the device from Express and Connect, make sure the History on the watches is cleaned up then add it back to Express again. Master Reset the device if needed.

    How do I perform a reset on my Forerunner 305, 205, 301, 201 or 101?

Again I am sorry for the troubles.

Curt - thanks for reply. Problem not solved.

    1. Deleted all but 1 month. No improvement
    2. Master reset. Garmin Express now doesn't find my device. Device Manager tells me device cannot start (code 10).'
    3. Run Microsoft Fixit. Finds issue with Garmin USB GPS and fixes it. Express still doesn't find my device.
    4. Remove and reinstall 305 in Express. Now it finds it.
    5. Garmin Express claims it synced! Hurrah!
    6. Garmin Connect shows nothing.
    7. Remove 305 & create new activity. Replace on cradle. Garmin Express now doesn't find my device. Device Manager tells me device cannot start (code 10).'

Help! (And I'm not going to run Fixit every time I need to sync...)

That is a USB driver, combination hardware issue. Please make sure you have the latest USB drivers installed. There was an update on April 25, 2015. You can download them from here: https://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=591 Also, please connect the USB cradle directly into a USB port on the back or side of the computer. Avoid any external USB hubs, keyboards, or USB extenders. You might try a different USB port than the one your using after installing the USB drivers. Clean the contacts on the back of the watch and the cradle as well.

Again I am sorry for the troubles.

  • Garmin Express will not send courses to Forerunner 305

It is able to get data from the 305 but when I create courses in Garmin Connect and try to send them to device, the following happens

-in "Your Queue" it says "You Have items Ready to Install"

-when I click the "Install' button, it says "Syncing" for a few moments and then I get a red shaded bar above "Your Queue" that says: "There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect" and then under "Your Queue" it still says "You Have items Ready to Install"

when I check the device, indeed the courses have not been transferred

also, under "Your Queue" if I click on "View Details" it does show the courses I want as ready to be "installed"

    Can anyone help me please?
  • thanks. I already updated the USB drivers earlier. Again, it seed my device, but won't send the courses to it.

tried changing the USB port - didn't help
  • what really annoys me is that until last week, the good old garmin training center worked just fine for me.

    Curt,
Thanks again - I was already in a dedicated USB port, so no change there.

    1. Downloaded file at link provided. Ran ok.
    2. Cleaned contacts on back of watch. One of them is lacking a bit of copper, but since I can see the TCX files in Program Data > Garmin > CoreService > Devices> ######> Sync > FitnessHistory, I know the data is getting from the device to the PC.
    3. Connected 305. Ran Garmin Express. Identifies as not connected.
    4. Open Device Manager. Still Code 10.
    5. Check Driver for Garmin USB GPS. Version is 2.3.1.0 dated 4/19/2012. Hmm.....why not the new one?
(Aside - driver file name is USBDrivers_2311 but when I tooltip over it, the file is version 3.0.0.0. Maybe a naming correction is needed?)
    6. Ran drivers installer again. Restarted. Nope.
    7. Device Manager again. Driver > Update Driver > Search automatically. Nope. It claims I'm up to date.
    8. Hmm. Another port? Nope. Same result.
    9. Nuclear option. Uninstall the driver via Device Manager. Run Garmin Driver 2311 Installer again.
    10. Reconnect Garmin. Installing Garmin USB GPS window pops up & works for a bit. Device Manager shows 2310 as driver version?
    11. Based on support.garmin.com/.../case.faces, I try to direct the update manually to C:\Program Files(x86)\Garmin\USB_Drivers\ but Windows has determined that the driver for my device is up to date. Thanks Windows. Grr.
    12. Uninstall driver again. Rerun Garmin Driver 2311 Installer again. Run Garmin Express - it claims my 305 is not connected.
    13. Ok, let's try another approach... Switched device installation settings from auto to Never install driver software from windows update.
    14. Disconnect & reconnect 305. Still 2.3.1.0. & code 10. Uninstalled driver.
    15. Disconnect & reconnect 305. Still 2.3.1.0, 4/19/2012, but now Garmin Express sees my 305, attempts to sync and gives me back the original "There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect". Driver is now working properly according to Device Manager.

    Ugh. Any more suggestions?

The current USB version in the Device Manager is 2.3.1.0. The update in April just added digital signing for the Aviation Card Programmers, so your USB drivers are OK. The Error code 10 error can be caused by drivers or hardware. You've done your due diligence with the drivers. The device could be creating an error that Device Manager doesn't understand so its generating the error code 10. Try running the WebUpdater application to see if the 305 and computer can communicate. The WebUpdater will check the firmware version on the 305 and give you the option to reinstall it. If the reinstall works then you know the device and computer can communicate. If the WebUpdater cannot recognize the device then you're looking at a repair.

I am sorry for the troubles. I suggest you delete the Forerunner 305 from Garmin Express and Garmin Connect then add it back again. Your Connect page indicates that the device needs a firmware update to version 2.90 so I suggest you complete that before sending anything else. Also, shorten the name of your Course before you send it from Connect.

How do I delete a fitness device from Garmin Express?
