New Version of GE was Terrible

GE autoupdated to the 4.something version and my Edge 205 was unable to sync. This after restarting, uninstalling, reinstalling, etc.

Finally, I reinstalled an old version of GE from here:
http://garmin-express.software.informer.com/download/

Everything is working fine again.

Terrible upgrade...(and I've disabled the auto-update feature on GE)
  • I have also had huge problems updating my devices since GE issued the 4.x version, and can confirm that removing all traces of it and returning to 3.2.29 does allow updating, but you have to be patient as the downloads still stop and require restarting frequently. I had to use basecamp to update an old 1410 from the map that had eventually downloaded to the PC.

I'm afraid I have to blow a big raspberry to Garmin support, who have never let me down before, because their help consisted of facile suggestions such as checking the clock was correct on the PC. Like sussamb I have been a Garmin user and supporter for many years - since the late 1980s at least. They have always been knowledgeable and helpful before, so I hope that my very disappointing experiences are a temporary aberration.

However, I can only echo the OPs recommendation that affected users (I think it is impossible to say what proportion of the total that is as many people don't know that they can upload maps or can do so or can be bothered) should revert to a 3.x version and thank him for the link.
  • Just a point .... Using BaseCamp to update your 1410 is fine if all you want to do is update the map, but it won't update your junction view file so you'll lose that feature, which may not be important to you.

Incidentally a mismatch of clock settings does cause issues so it wasn't as facile as you might have thought :)
  • My opinion is also this update of garmin express suks, all my devices (forerunner 405 and edge 705) simply can´t connect and send activities to gamin connect.
  • Difficult to help with so little information but try the steps in these FAQs, if no improvement explain in more detail what is happening and where it fails

  • i add the devices to express just fine then when start sync in the GE " error sorry but the sync with connect doesn´t work"
  • I thought I'd add my two cents since the powers-that-be at Garmin seem to live in La-La land. I too have problems every time GE updates. It starts as if it is brand new. Does not recognize any of my pieces of hardware - FR 305, FR 310XT and a Nuvi something or other. I have to reinstall them each and every time GE updates. IT is a major nuisance.

And one more thing, It wants me to register my devices again. They have been registered for ages. Why, all of the sudden, at each update, do I have to deal with this stuff again??

    Dear GARMIN -

My 310XT would not transfer data last weekend. I tried again today, and it did not work. SO: I manually started GE and Lo and Behold - it looks completely different and will not transfer. Thought I would try a "work around" that worked with the older version: Delete the device from GE and reinstall. NO delete button obvious.

I'm in agreement with the user above: It is TERRIBLE that you would update GE without permission, and then install a version that does not work.

I'm reluctant to install software from a 3rd party source.

I went through weeks of trying to get GE working after it was first deployed. It seems strange that a company that specializes in Sports products does not provide support on the weekends.

I have used Garmin devices for years, purchased probably 10 of them. As a dedicated running tracker, I loved them all. The support is horrible, and the ANT Agent has always been quirky. However, there is competition now, and I may be parting ways with Garmin, SPECIFICALLY because of the poor deployment and support for GE.

The exchange above is telling. "It works for a lot of people, so we don't really care about you if you have a problem." This is a mass market device. I'm using standard windows computers. It SHOULD work.

I would REALLY like GE to work.

The suggestion above is to delete the device and re-add it. I don't see any way to delete the device.

When I go to Add a Device, it does not "see" my 310XT.

    Any OTHER Suggestions?

OK - Update. Completely NEW look for GE, but I evenutally found the place to DELETE my device and then re-install.

It seems to work. Hopefully it will continue to work.
