Garmin Express unable to install Australia & NZ 2015.10 Maps

Hi

Purchased a Nuvi 2545 LMT a couple of days ago and finally got around to (trying to) install everything necessary tonight, but with limited success.

I have installed Garmin Express, and registered the product. When Garmin Express was installing it identified some necessary updates. All of those updates have worked except for the map update, when trying to install I get a message almost instantly stating "There was an error installing Full Coverage of Australia and New Zealand 2014.40"

I have searched threads elsewhere on this site for an answer with no luck. I have tried running as administrator but it made no difference. I tried the install quite a number of times.

The thing I do not understand is that I would have thought the product would already come with that map installed. When I log into https://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/customers/myMapsHome.htm, it tells me that I have "City Navigator Aus & NZ NT 2014.40-HERE - Map+P+HT+PA+LA,Jan 14".

However, when I use the device itself, in the My Maps section, nothing is listed. I do not understand how this can be.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing Garmin Express, no difference. I originally tried downloading the maps to both the device and the PC. After I uninstalled and re-installed, I tried to download just to the device, no luck there either, I just keep getting the exact same error as stated above.

I saw on another thread someone asking if another person with a similar problem had not thought to do a backup first, in my case their was no opportunity, as the setup process led me to this point.

Can anyone offer a solution please?

PS Is there any way to change my username? I would prefer to use an alias rather than my email address. There doesn't seem to be an option in settings... :(

I also have the same problems as with most from this forum http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1996043 (as there was a recent sale in Australia for devices) I basically updated the device, all firmware updated fine but your software deleted my maps so i didn't have any maps installed, i finally managed to get a map back by using basecamp and copying the map from it to the device.

This means I no longer have 3D maps though. I'll open a support case if necessary (Nuvi 3597LMT) however with so many people having problems with seemingly the same sort of issue I assumed the fix would sort out the issue for most and me as well.

I'll try again on the weekend.
  • To be fair it's not the application AFAIK but a problem with that particular map. I've had no issues updating my 3 nuvis using Express for around a year now, which is when I started using it. Note that from a post elsewhere Express isn't designed to work on a virtual machine, so you should avoid that.

MapUpdater too is a reliable piece of software that many (for vey good reasons) refuse to abandon in favour of Express.

Hopefully the fact you are still having issues will cause Garmin to look again at that mapset.
  • Normally it is, in this case there's an issue with the map. I'm surprised it's taking this long to fix though. Have you tried following the advice and ensuring you ONLY download to the device until the issue is resolved?
  • Well personally I wouldn't get too excited just because one map update has failed like this, it's an unusual event and certainly not the norm. Those unable to update their map to the latest still are able to use their GPS, and many users never bother to update their maps or if they do it's not every 3 months or so.

The real losers at the moment are those where the update has deleted their existing maps and now have no maps on their device. Prudence dictates that with all electronic devices you back up your data, those who have been prudent will simply need to reinstall the previous map. Those who haven't seriously need to look at how they handle any modern device. I know folks who have lost their mobile phones and then agonised for days as they've lost all their photos, music, contacts etc as they never bothered to back their stuff up. The more we rely on electronics the more we need to ensure data is properly backed up, and not just in the case of Garmin GPS devices.
  • Well I would say that your experience is unusual ... if you've been suffering for 18 months I'd suggest you have an issue with your setup somewhere. I wonder why you didn't ask for help before? Exactly what happens when you try to update, folks here may be able to help. If it's not related to the Aus&NZ map though please start a new thread.

You say that like it's easy for the average user, it's not. There is no function in Garmin software to backup the .System folder, you have to do it yourself. The user needs to know it exists for one as it's a hidden system folder. Secondly the newer devices don't even show the folder as it's a MTP device, you need to go to the Volume screen and long press the top right corner of the display to access the Developer options and switch it to Mass Storage mode. All of which I found out AFTER Garmin Express deleted the maps. It's not just the maps missing either, it's the Junction View files from the JCV folder, Speech files from the ASR folder, SID files, etc.

Garmin Express has a backup option but it only backs up personal data, not maps. So you can't really tell people that they should have backed up the device to recover lost maps.

Now that I know, after reading up on this myself, once the AUNZ2015.10 maps get installed I can make a copy of the .System folder.
  • You don't even have to do all that, although I do. Just select the Download to PC option. They're then available in basecamp should you ever need them.
  • The download to PC option? Where's that? Garmin Express?

You don't mean when you're installing the maps do you, selecting Device only, Computer only or Device & Computer? If so then it downloads the maps to be available in Basecamp. You can then send that map to the device, when the map download works. It doesn't give you the JCV, ASR, etc files needed for the GPS to fully function though.
  • Agreed, but not all devices have all of those. None are essential for the device to work as a GPS.

It's just an option should you don't want to step through all the actions you described, although as stated I do.

    Another one with this problem

Brand new 2597LMT purchased from TheGoodGuys today. Unit came with 2014.10 onboard. GE successfully updated the firmware to 4.40 however all attempts to download 2015.10 maps are failing. I'm getting the "download failed - contact support" error in GE. Running latest version of GE 3.2.9 on Windows 8.1

Also tried GarminMapUpdater.exe v3.3.3, it gets to about 80% then bombs out.

Have emailed Garmin support and will be calling the 1800 number in the morning. If I can't update the maps then I'll be returning the unit for a refund.
