Problem with Middle East and Europe map

Former Member
Former Member
I just purchased the Nuvi 3490 with lifetime Middle East and north Africa Maps. It also includes Europe. I registered my device and the lifetime update card on the garmin site and it does show in the details there. After installing the garmin express my Europe maps updated to 2015.10 but my primary lifetime update map of middle east is showing error. There was a problem activating the map. I have written to garmin twice but they have not replied. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

You should remove the SD card then check the Map Info screen on the Nuvi. Uncheck to disable any map versions that are listed. I recommend that you delete the Nuvi from Garmin Express then format the SD card. Add the Nuvi back to Garmin Express with the blank SD card inserted then reinstall the 2015.10 maps.

    How do I format a microSD/SD card?

    Curt,

thanks. I had to deviate from your recipe, but I finally won. I had to use some of your advice plus the Garmin MapInstall app (from previous encounters with Customer Care). I had difficulties with Express - it would not install and the GPS would not run without routable maps. The problem appears to be due to Express not saving to the external SD card - but MapInstall allows that. Let me know if you need to know more, in case that can help others.

please try to fix my Garmin..

Looks like you're good to go. Try it again. If you have issues, you may need to remove the device from Garmin Express, restart Express and try again.

That is a different issue than others on this thread but hopefully we can get it corrected. Please delete the device from Garmin Express then use the instructions to delete a file from the Nuvi, once the file is gone, add it back to Express and try the map update again.

    1. Delete the device from Express. See FAQ: What should I do if I'm having issues with the Garmin Express client?

    2. Delete the GarminDevice.xml file from the Nuvi.

    1. Connect the GPS to the computer.
    2. Open your MyComputer/Computer icon.
    3. Open the Garmin/Nuvi icon.
    4. Open the Internal Storage icon
    5. Open the Garmin folder.
    6. Locate the GarminDevice.xml file.
    7. RIGHT Click on it and choose DELETE.
    8. Disconnect the GPS from your computer and turn it off.
    9. Connect the GPS to your computer again.
    10. Add the Nuvi back to Garmin Express.

Run the City Navigator Middle East & Northern Africa NT map update again and hopefully it should install. If you continue to have troubles please get the GarminDevice.xml file from the device and attach it to your reply.

I was able to reproduce the issue on my side using your xml file. I have figured out what the problem was that you were having with the update not working with your device. In order to fix the problem, I had to create a modified GarminDevice.xml file. Once you have downloaded the file, please place it in the Garmin folder on your device. Delete the device from Garmin Express and read the unit into Garmin Express. You should be able to install the updates without issues now. If the program says you're up to date, just select the option to reinstall the maps.

Please note that if you disconnect the device and plug it back in the xml file will be overwritten and you will have to put the modified xml back on the unit. Once the maps are up to date on the unit, this should fix the problem and you shouldn't have this problem with future updates. Thanks for your patience.
