Outstanding issues with 3.2.4

Hi

I'm having all sorts of problems updating to 3.2.4.0 - I get an error that the core update service can't start with a suggestion about permissions. I'm running as administrator so this isn't the problem.

Looking in my temp folder I find log files that imply the issue is with loading a particular dll - legacyio.dll. Comparing with 3.1.9.0 I don't think this dll existed previously.

After the failure to update my install is basically hosed but thankfully the UK Garmin site still downloads 3.1.9.0 so I can reinstall. (Incidentally the US express download site provides a full installer for 3.2.4.0 - I've tried clean installing using this and it doesn't work either).

Is anyone else hitting similar issues?

I have followed a bunch of advice found elsewhere on support forums about running the .NET repair tool etc and this hasn't helped at all. It installs OK on my work PC so it would appear to be configuration specific - I just need to pin down what's causing the failure on my home PC.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Well let's hope, as this thread is almost a month old now with no resolution.
  • Still hoping ... very disappointed in the poor response here and zero response to emails.

I have yet to hear back on my log I submitted.
To suggest calling a 1-800 number for software support on a support forum is a first for me, kind of ridiculous actually... when they have all the info right here, and the logs.

Just for the record 3.2.7.0 gets the same install error as well.

    Possible fix/workaround!

Ok, I found a workaround that has let me get it installed, for better or for worse....

Anyway, the "Garmin Core Update Service" was stuck in a "Starting" status, not letting me stop it, start it, or otherwise. After trying numerous things and playing around I came up with a solution. Now this isn't my exact steps, cause I don't remember my exact steps; and they were not in a straight line.

    SO...
If the C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Core Update Service folder is not on your computer, attempt the Garmin Express install. Then while it's installing, copy that folder so you have a copy of it when the install fails and it deletes itself. Now rename it to the original name so that folder "Core Update Service" now exists in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin" directory.

    1. Close all Garmin Express install windows and Garmin processes in the task manager
    2. Start a Visual Studio Command Prompt in Administrator mode (I used visual studios 2010)
    3. Navigate to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Core Update Service"
    4. Run: installutil Garmin.Cartography.MapUpdate.CoreService.exe
    5. Give it time to complete, mine took a minute.
    6. Now just run the GarminExpress.exe installer again, with any luck it will install just fine!

    Good Luck!

LIFESPORT, you rock!! Thank you for posting this fix. I downloaded Visual Studio Express 2013 not really expecting much...and it worked, exactly in the steps you posted. Thanks again.
This fix needs to be pinned.
  • As we've now moved on to 3.2.7 and your issue seems resolved I'm going to close this thread.
