Outstanding issues with 3.2.4

Hi

I'm having all sorts of problems updating to 3.2.4.0 - I get an error that the core update service can't start with a suggestion about permissions. I'm running as administrator so this isn't the problem.

Looking in my temp folder I find log files that imply the issue is with loading a particular dll - legacyio.dll. Comparing with 3.1.9.0 I don't think this dll existed previously.

After the failure to update my install is basically hosed but thankfully the UK Garmin site still downloads 3.1.9.0 so I can reinstall. (Incidentally the US express download site provides a full installer for 3.2.4.0 - I've tried clean installing using this and it doesn't work either).

Is anyone else hitting similar issues?

I have followed a bunch of advice found elsewhere on support forums about running the .NET repair tool etc and this hasn't helped at all. It installs OK on my work PC so it would appear to be configuration specific - I just need to pin down what's causing the failure on my home PC.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
  • My guess is a corrupt .net install. I would look into that first to resolve the issue.

Hi Daniel - thanks for the suggestion.

I already used the .NET repair tool and it claimed to work fine. The machine is up to date with all Windows updates and I'm having no issues with any other software.

Any ideas about other ways to confirm/resolve corrupt .net installs?
  • I've been on POI and can't really find extensive discussion.

Your usecase is different from mine - I've never had any issues with Express in the past and have always been able to install and update with no problems.

Some of what you describe is familiar - if the update fails then it leaves behind bits of the old installation and only reinstalling the old version and then uninstalling gets rid of it. However for me I can reliably install/reinstall 3.1.9.0. I can't update to 3.2.4.0 or clean install it either. I suspect there's a new dependency missing from the installer but it's not clear what that is.

I installed .NET 4.5.2 (I was on 4.5.1) last night and that made no difference.

Would be good if someone from Garmin support could chip in - isn't that the point of these forums?
  • I've the same issue.
I'm installing on a Windows XP, hope this is not an issue... no way to update OS.
Which Windows version are you using?

    Good point - I'm on Windows7 32bit.
  • I just bought a forerunner 620 and have been trying to install Garmin Express all morning on my Windows XP PC with no luck! I keep getting the the failed to install try again message. Any help with what the problem would be would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I guess it would be good to clarify the error that we're getting.

Mine is an initial message saying that the garmin core update service couldn't start. When this message is dismissed then the Garmin Express Installer offers the option to "Try Again".

    Is this what you're seeing?
  • If you are receiving the "Failed. Try again?" message in Windows XP or Windows Vista, it is usually caused by an out of date Windows Installer. You can download the latest version of the Windows Installer from Microsoft here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8483

Once the service has been updated Garmin Express should now install properly without an installation error.

    Hi Jason

    Can you comment about Windows7?

    Thanks
  • See here which should help you, though it is aimed at Win7 users

So I've reinstalled .NET, run the .NET repair tool, installed the latest VisualC runtime and even tried the somewhat dubious "change the account for the core updater service" : none of these things work.

I have logs in my temp folder which must be of some use to someone in development to help understand why 3.2.4.0 has suddenly become an issue for me.

I'll remind you that I've used Express since the first release was forced upon us and had no issues to date.

Please advise further what steps you're going to take to resolve this. I paid a lot of good money for my 910XT and it is unacceptable that it's becoming useless due to your poor software updates.

I am also not able to install Garmin Express 3.2.4.0

Service 'Garmin Core Update Service' (Garmin Core Update Service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services

I have tried all the fixes suggested here on the forums, none have worked. I also have tried shutting off all services except windows services and rebooted in safeboot, and still get the same error.
    Running Windows 7 64

Yes that was the first thing I tried, run as admin. Brand new install as I just purchased a Garmin Edge 200

event viewer says .net is crashing.

I have already tried the repair .net and the install for Garmin Express still crashes
  • Express 3.2.4 requires the Windows Installer 4.5 to be installed on XP. It should have been included in an earlier update to XP before Microsoft discontinued support but it can be installed from http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8483

    Please focus on windows 7.

    Thanks.
