GE fails to sync with Edge 800

I installed GE on a laptop with Win8 and a desktop with Win7. Both installations do not start when I connect my Garmin 800 and when I start GE manually, it indicates my Edge 800 is connected, but will not sync. I get the message: "It looks like there isn't an ANT Stick connected. Make sure your ANT stick is plugged in to your computer's USB port and try again". Since I have it connected via USB and it says I am connected in the device window I shouldn't be getting such a message. Again, this is happening on both a laptop with Win8 and a desktop with Win7. I've been using Garmin Connect with Garmin communicator to upload files for years with no problem on both of these computers.

Any suggestions or solutions?
  • Please see the FAQ: What should I do if I'm having issues with the Garmin Express client?

If you have ever had another ANT device connected to this computer in the past, make sure the device has been removed from the ANT Agent and it has been uninstalled. How do I uninstall ANT Agent?

  • Curt,

I've never used an ANT device with either computer. My program listing on the Win7 computer shows Garmin Communicator Plugin, 2 instances of Garmin Communicator Plugin x64 (different dates), Garmin Express , Garmin USB Drivers, and Garmin WebUpdater. The Win8 computer shows Garmin Communicator Plugin, Garmin Communicator Plugin x64, and Garmin Express.
  • Use the Garmin WebUpdater to verify the Edge has the latest software version installed. I have never seen Garmin Express identify a non-ANT device as one that needed to have the ANT Stick connected. It is getting the device information from the GarminDevice.xml file inside the Garmin folder on the Edge. If you continue to have troubles after checking the software with WebUpdater use the instructions to delete the GarminDevice.xml file. The Edge will recreate a new version, hopefully correcting any errors.

    1. Connect the GPS to the computer.
    2. Open your My Computer icon.
    3. Open the Garmin icon.
    4. Open the Garmin folder.
    5. Locate the GarminDevice.xml file.
    6. RIGHT Click on it and choose DELETE.
    7. Disconnect the Edge and allow it to start up.
    8. Try adding it to Express again.

  • Curt,

Thanks for the suggestions, but I found no change following your directions. I used WebUpdater to check that I had the latest version (I did), then deleted the GarminDevice.xml, disconnected the Edge 800, started it up and after reaching a ready state, turned it off. I also deleted the device from Garmin Express. I then reconnected the device, started Garmin Express, added the Edge 800 and when it attempted to sync I got the same error of looking for an ANT+ stick even though the device shows as connected.

As an extra step I went back to WebUpdater and reinstalled the current software then went through all the steps I outlined above, with the same result. I did this on my Windows 7 desktop and did not try it on my Windows 8 laptop, although, given what happened here I wouldn't expect a different result.

BTW, I have many (334) activities on my device going back a year. A long time ago (more than a year) I found Garmin Connect would not respond to "upload selected activities" and I've used manual upload for a long time. If memory serves me, it was not sensitive to how many activities were stored on my device. Going back even further, the Edge and/or Garmin Connect choked when I had more than about 40-50 activities and I'd have to delete activities to get the interface working again.
  • Having that many activities on the device could certainly cause a sync error. Garmin Express will examine the device's activities then compare them to the activities already uploaded to Connect and then only upload the new ones. If there is any corrupt data in the activity files on the device it could stop the sync process. If the activity is already in Connect I suggest you delete it from the device. Once you have the device cleaned out sync should resume.

  • I am having a similar problem with my Edge 500. GE detects a 500, but does not detect the serial number. It then stops and renders itself useless. I'm also unable to upload data to GC or Strava directly from the 500. I have to save the file and manually upload. It's a bit of a pain as I have become accustomed to nearly automatic uploads. Any suggestions on how to fix this are welcome.

Oh, and I tried deleting my activities as I was up to 54. I will let you know if that changes anything.
  • No change after deleting files from Garmin Folder in the Edge 500.
  • Curt,
I first deleted all but the last six activities, which included one new activity. I removed my uSD card also. No change in the error message. I then tried deleting all but the new activity with the same result. I'm not sure what else to try!
  • I am also having problems syncing with my Edge 800 using Garmin Express, with it reporting that there is no Ant Stick connected. I've never had a problem uploading using the old Garmin Connect setup and have reverted back to the classic Garmin Connect and no longer use Garmin Express. As an aside I have sent two emails to technical support regarding this and, to date, have not received a response. Not great customer service!
  • Edge 500, can't sync to GE. I did everything identified above. Here is the error message:

There was an error syncing with Garmin Connect.

Sorry, we couldn't sync your device. Please try again.

It works on Strava, so I guess I won't use Garmin Connect anymore.
