Garmin Express 3.1.7.0 - Annoying Windows XP End Of Life Notification - please remove

Dear Garmin,

I would like to ask you to either remove this annoying End-of-Life Windows XP Notification that started cropping up earlier this week in Garmin Express or alternatively add 'Acknowledge' button so the message can disappear completely.

I understand that current version of Garmin Express I use (3.1.7.0) is still fully compatible and supported under Windows XP, I therefore don't see any reason why such notification needs to be displayed permanently on my system.

It's entirely up to me what I intend to do with this situation in the longer term, I merely ask you not to join the 'Upgrade your OS now' bandwagon as everyone else seemingly does.

Your sincerely,

...

  • I totally agree with TOM.KNOTT on this. Why should we be forced to "junk your computer, and join the 21st century with the rest of us!!"? For those of us who prefer to continue using XP, all we ask for is a stable version of Garmin Express which will continue to download lifetime maps to our devices. It's not just a question of buying a new computer, some of us have many thousands of pounds worth of hardware and software which is not supported by later versions of Windows. I know that it is a "throw away" society these days, but older hardware is still perfectly viable, and to be honest, of a much better build quality than most of the cheap equipment available on the high street. I don't expect fuel stations to suddenly stop providing petrol just because my car is old. Why should software suppliers be any different? (And I speak from 40+ years of software development experience). So Garmin, please give us a final XP version of Express and remove the annoying 'end of life' message and 'auto version renewal'. Thank you.
  • Thanks guys for your support.

Could someone from Garmin perhaps comment on this please? We're now on version 3.1.9.0 and notification stubbornly remains.

Just bought a 220 and the latest Express doesn't support XP. Won't even give an error just says failed to install. I didn't even consider that I should read the Minimum Requirements. In fact there's no mention anywhere on any packaging. So spent a couple of hours last night trawling the web.

So now I have to spend another hundred quid minimum for my watch to work.

Unless anyone can point me to an old release of Express.
  • It will install - or it should.

    System requirements are here:

    http://software.garmin.com/en-GB/express.html#requirements-modal

And - surprise surprise! - Windows XP seems to be gone (I take it: unsupported).
  • Garmin Express is currently still compatible with Windows XP. However, the latest version of the installer requires Windows Installer v4.5 which most XP computers do not have. For those of you that are getting the "Failed. Try again" error, you can download the installer from Microsoft here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8483.

Once you have installed this update, you should be able to install the latest version of Garmin Express.

  • Hey Jason,

Thanks for responding - definitely worth checking this as I was observing issues with MSInstaller in other areas.

How about responding to the query / request in the subject line of this thread though?
  • Just as a matter of record: My MSInstaller is the latest one so this would not be the only issue resulting in 'Failed. Try again?' message.

I can also see GARMIN retracting from supporting Windows XP completely (for example latest Basecamp is not compatible with XP anymore due to 4.5 .NET requirements). Shame on you.

In that case could someone from GARMIN please confirm two points:

    1. That my 3590LMT unit is still going to be supported under Windows XP and new maps releases possible to upload using it?
    2. That any latest XP-compatible version of Garmin Express will have this annoying message eventually removed - as per the first original post?
  • I see that the latest version of Express available on the website is now 3.2.4.0 (and that XP compatibility is no longer listed).

I also own a 3590LMT (£250 and top of the range unit when purchased a year ago). Could Garmin please reply to the previous post from Tadeusz Krzeminski and also advise us which is the 'final' version of Express still compatible with XP.

Thank you in anticipation of a reply from Garmin soon.

  • Moving forward future versions of Garmin Express will not be compatible with Windows XP. Microsoft has ended support for this operating system and Garmin is moving away from this system as well. Garmin strives to be Microsoft compliant and in doing so will not be developing new products for the XP system. Currently XP systems can install the latest version of Express for now.
