Garmin Express 3.1.7.0 - Annoying Windows XP End Of Life Notification - please remove

Dear Garmin,

I would like to ask you to either remove this annoying End-of-Life Windows XP Notification that started cropping up earlier this week in Garmin Express or alternatively add 'Acknowledge' button so the message can disappear completely.

I understand that current version of Garmin Express I use (3.1.7.0) is still fully compatible and supported under Windows XP, I therefore don't see any reason why such notification needs to be displayed permanently on my system.

It's entirely up to me what I intend to do with this situation in the longer term, I merely ask you not to join the 'Upgrade your OS now' bandwagon as everyone else seemingly does.

Your sincerely,

...

  • We are not asking Garmin for XP program development. All we would ask for is a stable, final XP version of Express which will continue to download lifetime maps to our devices. Perhaps you could advise us of the 'final' XP version number, and maybe archive it in the downloads section of the Garmin website.

That would be very much appreciated.
  • Please just put an acknowledge and never see this message again checkbox into the software. I will still be using XP until I come into some money and buy a new pc with new software. Who knows when that might be... and I don't like being nagged by software.
  • How do I dump the new Garmin Express and go back to the old one?

How do I return to the previous version of Garmin Connect - the software that worked for me - if I dont want to use the new shortly to be incompatible version?

I run Windows XP. I do not intend to upgrade to a less stable OS and yet again become an unpaid Microsoft bug finder, quite apart from the cost.
However I did buy Garmin kit because it worked with my system and guaranteed it always would... I have very foolishly taken the new version of Garmin Express and installed it only to be told that in the medium term this will no longer be compatible with my OS. Great. Thanks... a word of warning before I installed it would have been useful... much appreciated Garmin. After the notification about all the tought and care you have put in to producing this new version you seem to have forgotten to say it'll be useless with my computer sometime in the future (until it was too late).

At the moment the new "Garmin Express" is trying to sync my device... unfortunately the new software is not recognising my Garmin toggle so the sync is failing... stuck in a never ending sync loop. Nice start. If Garmin dont mind not volunteering me for a multiple hundred pound purchase and would just keep their promise of allowing me to upload my stats that'll do me just fine. just dont force me onto a OS I dont want and dont trust.:mad::mad:

So how do I go back to my old Classic version please. I dont care about updates as long as I have kit that works.
  • No reason why you should have an issue, just keep the last Express version that works with XP.
  • No reason why you should have an issue, just keep the last Express version that works with XP.

I tried that with 3.1.9.0 (albeit for a different reason) but now it is forcing an update to 3.2.7.0 so keeping my old working version is not an option.
  • I used the system restore to get rid of Express. I am now back using Communicator which is still working. It recognises my ANT device as well which is a step up from the "thought" through Express which failed to recognise the ANT being attached to my system. I have also found on the website the mechanism to return to the Classic interface... which is much clearer than the awful new web interface, however I did notice that when I switched back it said that it was a "temporary" return to the classic interface.

With respect Sussamb its not enough to say there isnt a issue without telling us how to:

    a) in my case get Express to recognise the ANT hardware that connects computer to watch (without which the Garmin watch and website is useless),
    b) how to decide when the next offered update is the one that will make our GPS hardware and software just useless extra weight to carry around on runs etc due to incompatibility,
    c) how to stop the automatic download and installation of the Express updates within the Express application,
    d) why the future compatibility issues arent explained to customers UNTIL after the Express software is installed,
    e) why Garmin think a shoulder shrug to existing customers is sufficient with regards to Garmins requirement that we go out and spend potentially thousands of pounds updating OS's and any other software that then may become incompatible with the latest Beta test M$ OS software,
    f) whether we can stay on Communicator (which works on my machine) rather than Express (which this first version of wouldnt recognise the ANT device) for the forseeable future or whether we will be forced to move onto Express (with its warning that in the short term it will become incompatible with my OS i.e. fail to run - although the first Express version also fails to run for me) to continue to make use of the online facilities.

This all feels a bit as if I have invested money and time building up a (personally) valuable data set and using a bit of very useful kit (which my Garmin GPS is) and now some software person somewhere has decided that my choice of OS is reason enough to remove my ability to add to that dataset and continue to make use of the hardware and software purchased, or the data I have placed in Garmins care.

I suspect that as my Garmin hardware is less than half way through its anticipated battery lifetime there might be a case for Garmin presenting me with some monetary compensation for the loss of facility Garmins decision represents. A cheque that would go a significant part of the way to enabling me to purchase a competitors hardware (one that doesnt mind which OS I use) and Garmin providing me my full data record (without any loss of content or use) in a form that is portable to someone elses online system would seem reasonable to offer to those of us who dont have the buckets of cash to throw at Microsoft to upgrade OS and replace other purchased software that is subsequently found to be incompatible.
  • Well I've never said folks don't have problems, but really ... if you're running an OS that MS no longer supports things are going to creak at the seams. As I've already stated, Express 3.2.7 still works with XP so for the moment all should be OK. I'm not employed by Garmin ... what will happen in the future is beyond my control.
  • OK Sussamb, I get that you are a forum admin with no company connection, but could you flag these issues up for attention by a paid employee or agent of Garmin so I can get an authoritative response, or maybe point to a thread that is more relevant to my problem/queries.

As an IT consultant I did wonder why should things creak at the seams just because an OS is no longer supported? I only use software that is compatible and the XP OS itself is the most successful and stable that Microsoft has ever produced! The fact that M$ has decided to no longer offer updates (except in emergencies) should have zero effect on me unless the companies that offer my third party software decide to provide updates that are not compatible... which they dont usually. They either provide a completely different version of their software which is tailored to each OS or they maintain systems for the legacy customers... depends on the value they place on that OS's customer base. Most companies supplying software and data repositary facilities go to great lengths to keep customers onside by not dumping them due to choices they have made on OS's.
  • Well with luck one of the Express team will answer your concerns, but just like a final XP version of Basecamp has now been left for those who haven't moved on I'm sure there'll be final Express version too. In any case provided you uncheck the 'Update Express automatically' box in Settings you should be able to keep any version that works for you.
  • Thanks for all your input to this subject - really appreciated and also glad to see that I'm not the only one!

    So to reiterate:

    1. Can we have this annoying notification removed in the first place please?

    AND / OR

    2. Can we have the final stable, with no nagging screen, Windows XP compatible version of Garmin Express released? If such thing was possible in case of BaseCamp I don't see any reasons why it should not be the case here as well?
