Unable to link Montana 650t to Garmin Connect using Garmin Express

Hi

I have just installed the current version of Garmin Express (3.1.7.0) on to my Windows PC running Window 7

When I plug my Montana 650t into the USB it is recognised correctly by Garmin Express and is listed there under the device tab. However, when I try to activate the "Link to Connect" feature from within Garmin Express, I get the following error, after completing the sign in page...

"We're sorry...
There's a problem with our servers, which means that Express is temporarily unavailable. We're working as fast as we can to get it back up and running. Please try again later."

I have been trying for days. I have also tried the following...

- Made sure that I have latest software on Montana and PC (Montana is 5.90 and Garmin Express is 3.1.7.0)

- Reset Garmin Connect password.

- Done master reset on Montana.

- Switched off the Windows Firewall

None of these has resolved the problem.

Is there a known problem between the Montana and Garmin Express?
Can anyone help please?

Many thanks

same issue with Garmin Etrex 30. The same Garmin Express installation works fine with my Edge 500 and Forerunner 610. just cant link the etrex. note you have to use the old version of Garmin Connect, the 'modern' one doesn't have the manual upload option (it can see the etrex but wont take any files from it. just sits and spins, so manual upload is the only way). Garmin better not bin the old website in favour of the modern one till this issue is fixed, or there will be no manual upload button and no way to upload Etrex data to Garmin connect.
  • My Etrex 20 links without issue, and syncronises via Express. So unsure why you're having problems with your Etrex 30

it can link to express it just can connect to garmin connect. ""there's a problem with our servers, which means that express is temporarily unavailable" message is shown for the etrex 30, where as my Edge and forerunner both have my Garmin Connect profile photo and can sync back and forth no problem.

Any updates on this? I got my montana 650t for a Christmas present, and I'm still unable to use it to it's full potential. Looking forward to the day that I can link it with Garmin Connect.
  • I've conducted extensive tests with uploading from my Montana 600. By far the easiest upload is to "ridewithgps.com" As long as you have the Garmin plug-in installed it works every time. It seems crazy that a third-party website can do what the GPS manufacturer's website fails to do!! So far I'm unable to use the NEW connect.garmin site although the old one works some of the time via the plug-in.

Gixerman, I have an Oregon 450 and Express doesn't even give me the option to link it directly to Connect. If you have Base Camp installed for your Montana simply export your data as a .GPX file and then manually upload it to Connect. That's what I do when I use my Oregon for fitness. That way i can trim out the parts at the beginning and end of my ride. That section of my ride functions as both the commute to my real ride and as a warm up and cool down. I don't want to keep track of that. I just wish they'd figure out to add a "send to connect" link inside base camp. Kind of a no brainer in my opinion.

And I found a string somewhere in the forum that pointed out that manual upload does still actually exist in the new "modern" interface page. Go to the Activities page and look to the far right just above the chart. You'll see the word "Import". Click it an the Manual Upload dialogue box pops up. Click "browse" and point it to your GPX file.

Connect has fallen prey to the old "keep improving it until it's useless" philosophy.
  • I have a Garmin Montana 600 and use it all the time on my Quest velomobile (a carbon fibre bodied aerodynamic tricycle) I'm using a computer running Vista and either Chrome or IE browsers. (Everything is fully updated and the Garmin plug-in is installed) If I go the connect.garmin website I am usually able to upload the latest trip however this is not immediately apparent as the "progress indicator" keeps revolving-- going to the DASHBOARD page shows that the data has been uploaded but "maximum speeds" are usually extremely incorrect -- i.e often over 100 mph!. Strangely enough the non-garmin website ridewithGPS has no problems at all and always reports correct data even though "officially" RWGPS doesn't support the Montana!
IMHO it seems crazy that Garmin can't interpret the data from their own devices and it takes a third-party to do this properly! I've tried installing Garmin Express (and since removed it again) It correctly identifies the Montana and confirms that it has the latest update BUT makes no attempt to upload any data which of course means that I'm still stuck with using the old version and then editing the ridiculous max speeds from the correct RWGPS upload! Come on Garmin- the Montana was supposed to be a flagship device??

I cannot update my Montana 650t through Express (error message) or upload my track data through Express to Garmin Connect (Express shows the Montana's connected to Express, its just not uploading any data). These issues mirror several issues mentioned in this thread. I also cannot view my old (pre-modern version) map track data on Connect as well. I have almost 200 map tracks uploaded through the Classic version which I can't access on Connect. Interestingly, as another poster in this thread mentioned I can access all my track data and map track images through a separate non-Garmin App on my iPad. It's now the middle of July and I have not received any real solutions except manual workarounds for updating and uploading...it would be nice to know if these issues are even being addressed by Garmin.

My Etrex 20 links without issue, and syncronises via Express. So unsure why you're having problems with your Etrex 30

My Etrex 20 will not sync via Express. It keeps "syncing" forever. I have to manually upload the gpx files via the Connect website and communicator plugin.

Since the communicator plugin is bound to disappear sooner or later, this is bad news...
