Unable to link Montana 650t to Garmin Connect using Garmin Express

Hi

I have just installed the current version of Garmin Express (3.1.7.0) on to my Windows PC running Window 7

When I plug my Montana 650t into the USB it is recognised correctly by Garmin Express and is listed there under the device tab. However, when I try to activate the "Link to Connect" feature from within Garmin Express, I get the following error, after completing the sign in page...

"We're sorry...
There's a problem with our servers, which means that Express is temporarily unavailable. We're working as fast as we can to get it back up and running. Please try again later."

I have been trying for days. I have also tried the following...

- Made sure that I have latest software on Montana and PC (Montana is 5.90 and Garmin Express is 3.1.7.0)

- Reset Garmin Connect password.

- Done master reset on Montana.

- Switched off the Windows Firewall

None of these has resolved the problem.

Is there a known problem between the Montana and Garmin Express?
Can anyone help please?

Many thanks

Mmmhh...so...ok...errr.. presumably what you're politely saying is "yeah whatever" ??

Or am I being grossly unfair to assume that?

Your not going to ask me any questions? Ask me to try anything that might fix it and report back to help you "work on it" ? Check my GC account is working correctly ? Anything ???

Don't call us, we'll call you. .. right? £500 bucks and that's all I get.

I don't want to sound rude Josh but that's pretty poor service from Garmin

I've just posted a similar query in relation to a 310XT. Is there any other way of downloading activities?

I managed to find a temporary workaround to uploading my activities from my device to GC.

I installed Garmin Training Center then imported my device's GPX file directly into that, then export it back out as a TCX file then upload that to GC.

That seems to work ok but it's a PITA. I hope they can find a proper fix soon.

Ok. I may not have written that out very clearly as I was in a hurry doing it. Just in case it wasn't very clear, try this.....

1 - Install Garmin Training Center (GTC) on your PC if it isn't already
2 - Connect your Montana to your PC and let the PC recognise it
3 - Open GTC and click 'File', 'Import', 'History' then navigate to the GPX file you want (on your Montana, in the 'GPX'\'Tracks' folder of your Montana) and import it in to GTC
4 - Select the imported track in GTC and click on 'File', 'Export and when the dialog box to save it appears make sure you change the file type to TCX (not the original GPX), then save it somewhere convenient
5 - Go to the WEB VERSION of Garmin Connect (GC) at http://connect.garmin.com/en-US/ and sign in
6 - Click on the blue 'Upload' button (top right corner)
7 - On the next screen click on 'Manual Upload' at the bottom, then 'Browse' to the TCX file you exported in step 4, then click the 'Upload activities from file' button

That works for me every time so far.

Like I said it's a Royal PITA but it's the only way I've found to do it. I would suggest forgetting Garmin Express for now because it simply won't work until (unless?) garmin fix it.

Let me know it the above works for you and if it doesn't, let me know at which step it fails.

    Good luck

Same error with an Oregon 650.

The Oregon 450 and two satnavs worked fine, but been trying the 650 for four days and about twenty attempts - each time bounced back with "There's a problem with our servers" Pretty poor.

    Hello Springer,

Nice job spelling out the process with Training Center.
I have been doing that for years with many different devices so I can confirm that your description will work.
