Map update problem with Garmin Express

I have attempted to update the maps on my Nuvi with the old installer. I was then forced to install the Garmin Express program to do so. The maps and other software updates downloaded alright. However, they never installed on my unit (no warning, no error messages during 5 hours).

I then went to MyDashboard online with the latest Firefox browser. The Garmin site never recognized that the latest Garmin Communicator module was already installed. I then used Internet Expplorer to log into MyGarmin. When I went to the maps update section, I was told that a map update failed and instructed to double-click on the file to start the installation process. However, I never found the bloody file on my computer. I was also offered the choice to entirely remove Garmin Express from my computer. I did so and logged back into MyDashboard. When I attempted to re-download the maps I was again told to install Garmin Express. I did so and I was then informed that it installed correctly. However, the program is now so sluggish that it does not recognize my unit when plugged-in and won't let me register it.

What the hell is going on with your map update process? Is there a solution to my problems?

Frustrated and angry,
  • I'm so sick of the responses here. Garmin express is rubbish program. Garmin needs to fix the issue of connectability to their devices with their new software. When I plug in my Garmin it should start up the program and updade the maps!!! The old updater doesn't work either. I've wasted 3 days on this. Next purchase, Magellen or TomTom GPS.

Unfortunately this is too true. I worked in IT for years as a systems programmer so what I have to say is based on "in the trenches" experience: The Garmin software is very poorly written, full of errors, and unreliable. No effort is made by the company to make sure that the software works prior to release instead of having it work in some cases and leaving the debugging to the users. If you can't connect your device to your computer, have the software detect it correctly, and do firmware upgrades and map transfers without errors then it indicates that Garmin doesn't care about their user base. Proof that they can do it? How well do you think their aviation navigation software works?
  • There are various threads here that indicate it works ... but you have to have Windows Installer up to date, see here

There isn't a problem with installing Garmin Express on Vista machines in general. Thousands of Vista users have successfully installed the application and are using it with no problem. In your particular case, there appears to be an issue. The most likely cause of that issue up until this latest release was the .NET Framework. The latest Garmin Express client 3.2.4 requires that older Vista and XP SP3 machines have the latest version of Microsoft Windows Installer 4.5 installed. If your machine is not fully up to date with the latest Microsoft software then you may start to have trouble installing newer application created by many different vendors. You can install Windows Installer 4.5 from: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8483

  • Bought 52LM updated express and I can update everything accept the 2015.10 map. No ideas. uploaded to pc and device failed
  • Which 2015.10 map? When you say it fails, how does it 'fail'? Do you get any errors messages, if so what?
  • @HOTMILO

I've sent you a PM. Note that users problem was resolved within hours of posting here, it has nothing to do with the current problem you're facing. Please don't muddy the waters.
  • Sent you a PM, moved it here https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?97169-Failed-try-again&p=328932#post328932 as it's a different problem to the one discussed in this thread.
  • Express software is updated fairly regularly so that is why support asked you to update. Which 'map update' is failing?

See this FAQ which should help you determine the cause http://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7Be908ee90-c6c1-11e1-dcef-000000000000%7D

Note that in the vast majority of cases the issue is with the relevant PC/mac setup somewhere. I've been updating nuvis and other Garmin devices for years and have only ever had one problem, and that was easily resolved.

Also note the final line in that FAQ:

The Garmin device should now be communicating properly with the Garmin Application . If it is not, contact Product Support by phone.

Product Support can then remotely access your PC to determine the problem.

Hi Sussmb, I am reading manual, both perfectly understanding what my GPS can do and what I want to do. I am a software engineer, I know my stuff and I know how to use Google.
I have installed Garmin Express on both OS X (10.8) and Windows 7. Install is successful, adding the device too, but the Garmin Express fails to connect to the update servers, either for checking for GPS device updates or for looking for Garmin Express software updates!! And this not a firewall problem, I have tried to deactivate it on the 2 platforms without better success. I have a residential D-Link router which does not do fancy firewalling stuff, simple NAT rules.
Garmin Map Updater at least is working! Hopefully Garmin Express will be fixed before the former is decommissioned...

My exact sentiments, I work in the radar engineering business and have 20 plus years working with electronics. I get them, they get me. But I have had constant problems with my Garmin devices ever since Garmin decided to stop using Tele Atlas Maps and started using Navteq maps. That could be a complete coincidence but it is true nevertheless. Garmin MapUpdater and Garmin express were/are neatly packaged software releases but severely lack the performance worthy of the Garmin name. Garmin mapping products are clearly superior to anything else on the market but at the same time they lack superior software updates to the people that spend money on their products. My intention here is not to bash the Garmin software team but to motivate them into releasing a product that they may be proud of and that will several unsuccessful attempts to load thus leaving me with a totally useless workday.
  • Well to help you you really need to supply some more information. What device do you? What map did it come with? What map are you trying to update? What did you spend £50 on?

What have you tried and where is it failing?
