How to delete old map 2022.25 from my nuvi 1350 when it's greyed out in MapInstall?

The device only has about 1.5gb of internal space and the new 2025.2 map of 4.8gb won't fit. I installed the new map to my computer first so I could choose what I wanted to move to the device but afterward it didn't automatically delete the old map, and MapInstall doesn't seem to allow manual deletion either. Both maps are shown with the old map taking up 1.2gb and the new map taking up 200mb.

How did the new map even get that big? Should I delete the old map through Windows Explorer?

  • Why not juct get a 32GB memory card and do the update in the nrmal manner through Garmin Express?

  • The normal manner for me was always just updating the device directly. I'm not aware that using a memory card is the new normal. What you're suggesting is to let the old map needlessly take up the internal capacity and load new maps on a SD card but I only need 1gb worth of maps so the device already has the space I need.

  • You pretty much summed it up when you said “The device only has about 1.5gb of internal space and the new 2025.2 map of 4.8gb won't fit.”. It simply needs more space.  If you remove the previous map you might brick the device.  Adding a memeory card and doing the update is the safest way for you moving forward.  I would suggest a 32GB card formatted to FAT32.

  • It only needs more space if I add the entire 4.8gb for all of North America, including Jamaica, Alaska, etc. The 200mb I've added is enough for a 5-hour radius but I don't mind adding more.

Why would removing the previous map end up bricking the device? Is that a known occurrence that a full map must be available on the device? I'm not able to select/deselect parts of that 2022 map.

  • You've asked what to remove and what not to remove; and I don't reliably know the answer to that question.  I know you can remove unused voices but that doesn't gain a lot. But I'm aware of instances where people have removed files and ended up with inoperative devices.  In many years of using Garmin devices, I've just found the best way is to use the Garmin provided methods.  With the 1350, keep in mind you are up against Garmin policy which reads "Live technical support and repair services are no longer available for this product."

More importantly, what is the aversion to a memory card?

    .

  • You can delete the old map safely with JaVaWa Device Manager.

Maps are getting more detailed continuously and are growing bigger because of that. The memory of your nüvi doesn't grow, so eventually you run out of space...

  • For what it is worth, “greyed out” generically means that the option or feature is unavailable or invalid.  This is usually done to prevent users from accidentally using a feature that is not applicable in a given context or at a specific time.  I think once you’ve done the update to the device with memory card, then you might be able to delete the previous map.

  • No aversion to a memory card except I don't currently have one that I can leave inside the device. Still, it just seems silly to use a memory card when the device already has all the space I need for the map portions I'd want.

  • Thanks, I'll try the part in your last sentence.

  • Thanks, I'll look into that program.
