Cannot Unlock Maps - Garmin Nuvi

Connected my Nuvi to the Garmin Express app. It said I should update my maps - which I did. Now, when I start Garmin Sat Nav it says Cannot Unlock Maps!. Ive tried a hard reset - same problem. Is it something that can be fixed? Has Garmin now moved to a subsrcibe option? If so, can I go back to the maps I had just a few days ago and which worked fine. Anyone know what is going on?

  • I can't see a post where he says 5Gb on a card, but yes, trying a new 32Gb card would be sensible although I'm still completely confused by this bing link as I've never seen anyone with that issue before. Ultimately the cloning method may at least confirm whether there is an issue with his PC or not. I'm sure we'll find out once he gets the card.

  • 32Gb microcard received. Was already formatted to Fat32. Before using I checked the Nuvi. Garmin Express said City and UK etc maps installed. Internal memory of Garmin showed 5.72Gb free of 7.15Gb. Inseted the new 32Gb micros card and took the option on Garmin Express to reinstall maps. Express went through the process. Looked at the folders on the Nuvi. Internal storage: 5.72Gb of 7.15Gb. Only folder on the 32Gb microSd card was one called SystemVolumeInformation which was a mere 88bytes. Looks like the Express has just reinstalled maps on the internal memory - which, if the internal memory is big enogh, would make sense. If 5.72Gb is shown as free out of 7.15Gb, I assume there should be about 1.4Gb of files/folders on the Garmin. But, when I checked properties of each file/folder, it only added up to about 60Mb (about 50Mb of that on "Vehicle"). No idea where the other 1+Gb is hiding?!

  • PS: Would it be risky to get rid of everything on the Garmin (all folders etc etc) - but save them somewhere else on my PC. Then see what happens if I try an update?

  • By your post discussing the new card is the device now working properly and with the maps you desire?

As to getting rid of "Everything on the Garmin...?  That would be the last thing I would do and I doubt that there would  be anything gained..  Just move forward and let the device do its thing now that a properly functioning card is present..

  • Sorry of i gave wrong impression. No, it's not working. Same problem as before. (Still intrigued about it saying about 5Gb free out of about 7 Gb on the internal memory, when all folders only add up to about 60mb. But that could just me not understanding  storage).

  • I had extensive problems installing UK maps..See the last post in this thread

for how many problems I had to solve (including unlocking maps).

  • Most of the large files are in the hidden .system folder

If I were you I'd try the cloning method I mentioned.
