Cannot Unlock Maps - Garmin Nuvi

Connected my Nuvi to the Garmin Express app. It said I should update my maps - which I did. Now, when I start Garmin Sat Nav it says Cannot Unlock Maps!. Ive tried a hard reset - same problem. Is it something that can be fixed? Has Garmin now moved to a subsrcibe option? If so, can I go back to the maps I had just a few days ago and which worked fine. Anyone know what is going on?

  • Perhaps @ has some thoughts on that Bing link.  I's personally blow it away and retest.

5GB may not be enough for a map update.  How much free space is available on the nuvi?

  • Thanks. I emailed Garmin support a few days ago, but nothing back yet. SUSSAMB? Who or what is that? I'm pretty sure it's not a space issue. No warnings, Express said all downloaded OK. No problems with downloading N America. I'm convinced it's an easy fix....but I've no idea what it is.

  • I'd delete that link as it shouldn't be there. Unless you backed up the uk map there is no way back. It's possible the UK map you had either wasn't a Garmin map or if it was it was pirated. Without knowing more of the history of your device it's difficult to advise further. Is it possible your device was a Travel Edition? There were only a few of them and updating them has generally caused issues for some.

I know you've emailed Garmin but I'd try calling them.

  • Many thanks. I've had the Garmin from new, had it for years. Never had a problem in the past whenever I updated maps. It's really very strange. When I try to reinstall UK maps (which is an option in Garmin Express), it takes the usual 20 minutes or so and can see the gradual progress..and it then says downloaded etc successfully. But then it denies me access then says no maps. I suspect Garmin won't be bothered as it's an old satnav.

  • Garmin Express shows maps have been loaded. When I switch on the Nuvi58 it says "Detailed maps are required for routing. No detailed maps found on this device", then it changes to "Canot unlock maps". I have a feeling that, although the Nuvi58 came with "lifetime" update of maps, somehow (maybe because when I recently updated maps, I MIGHT have unplugged the Nuvi58 too early), the Nuvi has lost the code/whatever that allows them to be unlocked.

  • Well, I contacted Garmin by phone. Very polite - but useless. Sent me an email with instructions but which basically amounted to me trying to load the maps again. I did try but, of course, got same problem. Hopeless. Clearly theres some sort of "bug" but Garmin have no interest whatsoever in trying to fix it. Last time I buy anything from Garmin. Very disappointing.

  • Well, well. So much for any discount. Apparently, if I send mine back they will sell me a new one for about £125 (I can get one for less than £100 from Argos. No attempt by Garmin to try and resolve the problem. Last time I buy anything from Garmin.

  • Two things, and I could be wrong.

    1.  A Garmin device designated as "LM" or "LMT" comes with one map and that map can be updated for free for the useable life of the product.  When I desire to add a 2nd map I have to pay for it.  My nuvi 2689 has a factory installed North America map that has been updated without issue for many years.  If I was to install at this time a UK map, I would have to pay for that update.  I think I can get a one-time UK update, or pay additionally for a lifetime UK update privelege.  In either case my SC card must be of sufficient size to hold the updates.

    2.  You SD card might be slight small to accommodate an update.  I have seen Garmin sources state that you need 8 GB of free space to perform an update.

  • Thanks again. My Garmin came with lifetime UK maps - and I've been updating regularly for years. The SD card (and internal 7Gb - I tried both) should be big enough - andf there were no "warnings" about not enough space - and Garmin Express says they have been installed. All very strange.

  • What happens if you go into the device settings and view the list of installed maps?
