It’s been like this ever since I bought it.
any ideas please?

Tell us about your PC (desktop or laptop and operating system, Windows 10, 11 or what?) and what Garmin device you are using.
You might want to review the video at the link below. In particular early on in the video content the narrator states that when connected to your PC (with a cable) you will not be able to do updates wirelessly…
Try using the Internet Connections troubleshooter.
Select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Select "Troubleshoot" (left edge of screen) > Select "Additional troubleshooters" > Run the "Internet Connections…
So - I have not been able to use a cable to connect the PC.
Instead - I am currently trying to redo the whole thing on a different computer - a laptop. SO FAR - the WIFI has not switched itself off when I connected the device to Garmin Express app on the laptop. I did a new download of the Garmin Express app on the laptop. It's whirling away with a three hour update behind me as I type this...
A couple of things happened before I did this (which is why I'm trying from a different computer now):
1. I tried turning the WIFI on the Garmin device OFF, before trying to connect it up to the PC I was using before. Nope - it still switched off the wifi on the PC.
2. Having run the update for the device over its own connection to my home WIFI, the update ran for about three hours, and then said update failed.
3. Now I have no maps at all on my Garmin device. (Garmin DriveSmart 66). This happened BEFORE I did a reset.
4. I reset the Garmin device - clearing previous data.
5. I lost all my saved locations. I backed up before doing the very first update (whenever I started this thread). I have transferred this backup file to the laptop. Once the 2.5 hours remaining on the 'updates' are done (they've already failed once today - this is the second try) - I will try to reinstate the backup files to get my saved favourites back.
6. All this depends on if my device actually has any maps on it.
7. This is not a happy situation. I thank everyone on here who's taking the time to try and help me!
BREAKING NEWS.....
After trying on my laptop - i have the maps back on the Garmin DriveSmart 66!
It has taken seven hours to update the device (three times), two buckets of coffee, headache pills, head scratching... and here we are a week later.
I no longer have the WIFI issue as I stopped using the PC and put Garmin Express onto a laptop. WIFI connection stays solid.
BUT: I don't know how to reinstate my favourites (saved routes).
While I backed everything up - on a different computer - then put that backup on a memory stick and saved it on the laptop I am now using - the next problem is this:
Unless you've done a backup first - on Garmin Express app - there's no backup to restore.
IF I backup the now working Garmin device, it will back up nothing as i previously cleared off all the favourites (even tho the restore instructions said I would not lose my stored favourites).
You only get to see the RESTORE button on the Garmin Express once you have indeed done a backup. Of course I have not done a backup on this new installation on the laptop. If I did do a backup - it will back up nothing as (see above) the rest of the device deleted all my favorites.
So doing a back up of nothing (on a cleared device on a new laptop) will restore,,,,, nothing!
And there is no 'search and yea will find whatever file you want to back up from' listed in the restore options.
Does anybody know how i can IMPORT my old backup data onto this device, please?
The restore function is a utility in Garmin Express. It is accessed via "Tools & Content" > Utilities tab. In there is a "Restore backup" button below which is a place to enter the path to the backup file. The path should be to the folder that contains the backup file. The "Restore backup" button is grey but that does not mean that it is disabled. It is just a poor choice of color by Garmin.
