Activities not synching with Garmin Express after 7.20.0.0 & 7.20.3.0 updates

When I opened Garmin Express last night to upload my latest activity I was prompted to update to version 7.20.0.0. I did so and now I'm getting a permanent error:

"There was an error synching with Garmin Connect"

....and my activity obviously didn't upload to Garmin Connect.

Everything was ok the previous day before the update so what has occurred? 

  • The run-as-admin workaround is interesting! I'll note that for later - but I'm not touching anything for now, as long as it works on 7.19.

    As for dickkant65's theory about the cause being related to a Windows update; I don't think it is. My problem was fixed by downgrading (no rebooting) and I don't think any updates were installed between my previous working synchronization and the update to 7.20. I also saw someone mention a Mac OS problem on 7.20, I think.

  • Thanks for all the responses people, I'm glad it's not just me experiencing this problem.

    Tonight I tried to run version 7.20.0.0 as an administrator but that didn't work so I'm going to uninstall it. Interesting to hear about the previous version - 7.19.0.0, I wonder why my Express chose to jump from 7.16.3 to 7.20.0 without all the interim versions?

    EDIT - My follow up is below, my PC didn't receive the interim updates as I suspect they were for different PCs/laptops/Macs/mobile devices etc.

  • I tried all of this - and it does not work. No Syncing of my data. Yes maybe I will try downloading the older version.

  • RESOLVED - Ok, here's a quick update to my post of a couple of hours ago. To recap I had version 7.16.3.0 installed until a couple of days ago when the (faulty) 7.20.0.0 update popped up; as you can see above I was puzzled why my Windows 10 64-bit PC jumped from 7.16.3.0 to 7.20.0.0 without receiving all the interim updates. As one or two of you did, I installed the previous update - 7.19.0.0., and although my Garmin paired and synched ok via the Ant+ dongle, when I clicked on the "View your activities on Garmin Connect" link, the Connect website wouldn't load, I'd get the login page several times but never my actual 'dashboard'. I also a tried installing a couple of different versions down from that - 7.18.3.0 and 7.17.1.0 and had similar minor niggles, one version would similarly not load my Garmin Connect 'dashboard' and the other did nothing at all when I hit the synch button after pairing my device. I therefore realised that the updates between 7.16.3.0 and 7.20.0.0 were obviously for different PCs, possibly Windows 11 PCs, Macs, Apple/Andriod phones etc, hence why my PC never received these updates. So in the end I installed the previous version that I had (7.16.3.0.0) and all is ok and fully functional.

    So I can vouch for the old downloads page posted earlier by Darren and advise all that there's no need to stress about the problems with the 7.20.0.0 update, just install the version you had immediately prior to this faulty one and you'll be good to go until Garmin fix the update.

  • Just to add to this thread: I too had this problem with 7.20. Went back to 7.19 and all good now. Will see if 7.21 is any better, but if not keep going back to 7.19.

  • Shaun, what version did you have immediately prior to 7.20 and did you experience any issue with the link to viewing your activities on Garmin Connect on your Garmin Express synch screen?

  • I was on 7.19 just before ... my syncing failed on the first attempted upload after installing 7.20. No issue with the link from GE to GC, though I've just had to check that out as I never use that. I use a separate bookmark in my browser to load GC - handy, as usually GE seems to work entirely in the background. It never shows a screen unless an update is pending or something fails. All good now on 7.19 HTH.

  • Understood Shaun, so 7.19 was obviously the correct one for you to go back to. I only use the link to Garmin Connect because it's there on the screen in front of me.

    I upgraded from 7.19 to 7.20.1 (not 7.20 to 7.20.1, in-place automatic upgrade, no uninstall, no reboot, no admin mode) and it works (for me).

    Gee golly, I wonder what them there release notes are gonna say...

    EDIT: Release notes are out and includes only 2 lines; something about voucher codes and
    "Resolved an issue with sync failures occurring for the vivofit 4."

    Is everybody in this thread only using and having problems with Vivofit 4?

    Another observation: about 8 hours ago Garmin Express showed an update available, not of the software but like when you've changed a setting for the watch or there's a firmware update, despite no firmware updates, and me not having made any settings changes to be downloaded to the watch.
