Garmin Express Updates always fails

Hi everyone, I need help with Garmin Express on my Windows laptop.

Ever since I bought my Laptop (2021) and installed Garmin Express, when an update becomes available, it is never able to update successfully and always fails. I always get this message:

"Install Failed. Garmin Express could not be installed in this computer. Try installing again.".

Running Express as Admin doesn't change anything.

The only thing that works is to force uninstall Garmin with the following commands in cmd:

1. wmic
2. product where name="Garmin Express" call uninstall
3. Y

Then to download the new Garmin Express from the website, and that installs fine.

This process is just really annoying and I don't understand why any update won't install successfully.

I'm have a Lenovo X1 Carbon running Windows 11 Pro.

Has anyone had this issue before? Is there an update log written somewhere that I can check in order to figure out what the issue is?

I have the same experience. I have never had this application update without errors. I have to use a trick called MicrosoftProgram_Install_and_Uninstall.meta.diagcab.

This app needs to be rebuilt from scratch because both the interface and the user experience it provides are very disappointing to me as a new Garmin user. If I don't see progress on this issue or at least a start in this direction in the coming year, I will definitely leave this brand.

Likely an issue on your PC. I've been using Express for years on numerous computers and Win versions without issue. Your best bet is to call Product Support so they can trouble shoot your system.

My PC is fine. I have a powerful new generation laptop and the latest version of Windows 11 (insider since 2014). I have a lot of experience in using various software as my main job is related to the IT sector. That's why I keep my system clean and always updated, without unnecessary tweaks and pirated software.

Besides, I was advised to use MicrosoftProgram_Install_and_Uninstall.meta.diagcab by a Garmin support :)

Something you might is the Microsoft .NET Repair tool. It is my understanding that the .NET Framework is a system requirement for GE. But at least one Windows 11 update can create an issue; specifically update KB5012643 for Windows 11, version 21H2, is unable to run .NET Framework applications.

I've tried this on my end as well and it hasn't fixed the issue. It only collected logs and said they need to be sent to Microsoft for further review.

It is very upsetting that Garmin just blames it on Windows without any further assistance...

Since this is an issue that affects several individuals, they could at least work with Windows to try and resolve the issue, instead of providing annoying workarounds.

Do you happen to have DeepL (translation tool) installed in your windows PC? Try to uninstall that (or mayby just shut it down) an retry to install the GarminExpress update.

if that is not the case shut down GarminExpress and rename the folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Express" into

something like "C:\Program Files (x86)\Garmin\Express.x" and start GarminExpress again.

Yes, I did have Deepl installed on my computer. Having it fully shut down didn't change anything. Then I uninstalled it, didn't change anything.

Then I renamed the folder Express to Express.x like you suggested, and I was able to successfully update Garmin! Now I'm not sure it worked in combination that Deepl is no longer installed on my computer but I can easily find that out by reinstalling Deepl.

But THANK YOU. I've had this issue for 2 years now... And you've just resolved it.
